Onion Games, the innovative indie studio renowned for its work on cult classics, has officially announced the Western release date for its highly anticipated RPG, Stray Children.
The game is set to arrive on the Nintendo Switch on October 30, 2025, bringing the whimsical and surreal experience to fans just in time for the holiday season.
Stray Children invites players to step into the shoes of a young boy who finds himself transported into the world of a retro-style RPG.
In this unusual setting, players explore a fantastical environment populated exclusively by children, encountering a variety of eccentric characters and story-driven interactions.
Echoing the unique philosophy and design sensibility of Moon RPG — another acclaimed title from Onion Games — Stray Children subverts classic role-playing game tropes and challenges players to approach obstacles through empathy, humor, and unusual tactics, rather than conventional combat.
"With Stray Children, we wanted to revisit the sense of wonder and strangeness that made Moon so memorable for players," said studio director Yoshiro Kimura in a previously released statement.
The narrative takes a bold step away from typical RPG conventions, featuring scenarios where players interact with so-called "Olders" — adults portrayed as monstrous figures weighed down by their own insecurities.
Instead of fighting, players can choose to whisper words of encouragement, make the Olders laugh, or share affirmations, resulting in truly distinctive gameplay moments.
Onion Games’ development team boasts an impressive pedigree.
Led by director and designer Yoshiro Kimura, art director Kurashima Kazuyuki, and composer Hirofumi Taniguchi, the studio’s collective credits include celebrated titles such as Rule of Rose, Chulip, Little King's Story, Chibi-Robo, and even Super Mario RPG.
Their approach often blends offbeat humor, unconventional storytelling, and a deep affection for classic Japanese game design, a tradition that’s strongly reflected in Stray Children.
Following the successful rerelease of Moon RPG on the Nintendo eShop, Onion Games has gained widespread recognition for influencing indie game developers worldwide.
Moon in particular is noted for inspiring Undertale creator Toby Fox, thanks to its genre-defiant storytelling and emotional focus.
Stray Children continues this legacy, promising a fresh yet familiar experience for both long-time fans and newcomers to Onion Games’ catalog.
With an official launch on the Nintendo Switch scheduled for October 30, 2025, Stray Children is positioned as one of the season’s standout indie releases.
The game will be available exclusively through the Nintendo eShop at launch, offering Switch owners the chance to explore its imaginative world later this year.
For RPG enthusiasts eager for something unconventional, Onion Games’ latest project is poised to capture imaginations once more.
