The new release will be distributed digitally via the Nintendo eShop worldwide, with Spike Chunsoft saying additional purchase and release details will be provided at a later date.
Background
The STEINS;GATE series began as a visual novel produced by 5pb. and Nitroplus, first released for Xbox 360 in 2009 and later ported to multiple platforms.
The property has since become one of the most prominent modern visual novels, spawning anime adaptations and multiple game releases.
Spike Chunsoft’s newly announced Octet of Shifting Space reimagines the narrative framework using the aesthetic and interaction model of early PC adventure games.
Design and gameplay
Spike Chunsoft explains the project aims to faithfully reproduce 'the look and feel of an 8-bit PC adventure game' while making the experience compatible with modern input methods, including on-screen software keyboards and USB keyboards on supported hardware.
Rather than the typical choice-based flow of contemporary visual novels, STEINS;GATE Octet of Shifting Space recreates text parser gameplay: players assume the role of protagonist Rintaro Okabe and explore Akihabara, typing English commands to interact with the environment, deduce solutions, and advance the story as they search for the stolen IBN 5100.
Visuals and audio
The studio details that the game emulates classic screen-drawing visuals in which images are rendered line by line then filled with color, and offers players the option to skip the drawing animation for a faster pace.
Multiple graphics modes replicate the palettes and display styles of vintage PCs, from limited 8-color RGB schemes to green monochrome monitor simulations.
On audio, Spike Chunsoft says the soundtrack and sonic presentation recreate FM synthesis and PSG chip characteristics; specific hardware differences—such as recreating three FM channels plus three PSG channels—are included to deliver an authentic retro sound profile.
Composer Takeshi Abo, who has previously worked on music for the STEINS;GATE series, personally handled the music for this project.
