Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster Arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 as Square Enix Celebrates a Decade of JRPG Excellence
Celebrating ten years of the beloved Bravely Default series, Square Enix has released Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster for the Nintendo Switch 2.
The acclaimed JRPG, originally launched on Nintendo 3DS in 2012, receives a modern update, bringing its enchanting story and innovative gameplay mechanics to a new generation of players.
This remaster marks both a return to the series’ roots and a recognition of its enduring fanbase across the globe.
In an exclusive interview, Bravely series producer Tomoya Asano and HD Remaster producer Naofumi Matsushita shed light on the decision to revisit this classic.
Asano noted that the development team began discussing potential ways to honor the series’ tenth anniversary as early as spring 2022.
While several options were considered—including developing a brand-new title or a full remake—the team ultimately chose to remaster the original game.
Their goal, Asano explained, was to enable fans to experience the first Bravely Default on today's gaming hardware.
"By spring 2022, our team was focused on how we could celebrate the upcoming tenth anniversary for Bravely Default in a way that would resonate with our fans," Asano said.
Assistant producer Masashi Takahashi was especially passionate during these talks, emphasizing the importance of the milestone.
Ultimately, the team decided that making the original game accessible through an HD remaster best served the community and the series’ legacy.
As work on the remaster progressed, the scheduling coincidentally overlapped with the launch window of Nintendo Switch 2.
According to Asano, this fortuitous timing allowed Square Enix to deliver the remaster on cutting-edge hardware, further enhancing the experience for players old and new.
HD Remaster producer Naofumi Matsushita highlighted another key factor in the decision-making process—the discontinuation of the Nintendo 3DS eShop, scheduled for closure in March 2023.
“Around that time, we saw strong reactions from both Japanese and western fans who still wanted online support for the original game,” Matsushita explained.
He went on to describe how this outpouring of support underscored the deep nostalgia and enthusiasm surrounding Bravely Default.
Although the team was unable to complete the remaster in time for the anniversary itself, Matsushita expressed renewed motivation after seeing the community’s passion.
Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster is now available for Nintendo Switch 2, delivering updated visuals, improved performance, and QoL enhancements for franchise veterans and newcomers alike.
As Square Enix continues its commitment to quality remasters, the release demonstrates the company’s dedication to preserving its RPG legacy for today’s and future generations.
