Description

Capcom has officially announced a new Okami sequel, reigniting excitement among fans of the critically acclaimed action-adventure series.

The announcement, delivered by original director Hideki Kamiya and members of Capcom during The Game Awards, marks the long-awaited return of the beloved franchise on modern Nintendo platforms.

First celebrated for its unique sumi-e inspired visuals and epic storytelling, Okami originally launched on PlayStation 2 in 2006, later making its way to platforms like the Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

In a recent interview with IGN, key developers clarified their vision for the upcoming Okami sequel.

Speaking with IGN reporter Rebekah Valentine, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi and Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata emphasized that the new title will be a direct continuation of the original Okami, rather than a follow-up to 2011’s Okamiden, which released for the Nintendo DS.

"We understand that Okamiden has a dedicated fanbase as well as its critics," Hirabayashi explained.

"We've considered the feedback regarding the story and how it may not have aligned with fans’ expectations.

Our new sequel is intended as a true continuation from the original base game of Okami, maintaining that narrative focus." While Okamiden featured Chibiterasu as a new protagonist and carried over many signature elements—such as the distinctive art style and the celestial brush mechanics—it has often been regarded as a spiritual successor rather than a full-fledged sequel.

The new game will revisit Amaterasu, the primary protagonist of the original Okami, as depicted in the teaser trailer that debuted at The Game Awards.

This decision effectively sets aside Okamiden’s storyline, streamlining the series' narrative trajectory. Okami has enjoyed sustained popularity through multiple re-releases and ports, with the Nintendo Switch version launched on August 9, 2018, reaffirming the series' relevance and accessibility on contemporary hardware.

Although an official release date and detailed gameplay features for the new sequel have yet to be confirmed, the announcement has already sparked considerable anticipation across social media and gaming communities—particularly among Nintendo Switch and potential Switch 2 owners eager for a fresh installment.

With Hideki Kamiya back at the creative helm and Capcom investing in a return to the original’s epic roots, the Okami sequel is positioned as one of the most highly anticipated revivals in gaming.

Fans can look forward to more updates and reveals in upcoming Nintendo Direct presentations and Capcom showcases as development progresses.
