Sonic Wings Reunion: Success Unveils New Footage and Full Release Plan for Nintendo Switch, PS5, and More Fans of the classic shoot 'em up genre have reason to celebrate as Success, renowned for its work on Cotton and other beloved franchises, is set to bring back the iconic Sonic Wings (also known internationally as Aero Fighters) with a brand-new installment titled Sonic Wings Reunion.

The upcoming release marks a return to form for one of the most respected horizontal shooter series of the 1990s, and Success has now provided the clearest look yet at the highly anticipated title while confirming detailed release plans across multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch. Since its announcement, developer Success had maintained a relatively low profile regarding Sonic Wings Reunion, initially offering little visual insight into the project.

That trend changed recently as the company published an array of promotional videos via its official YouTube channel.

In addition, a public location test for Sonic Wings Reunion has been underway at Tokyo's legendary Mikado Game Center.

This hands-on event, running from May 2nd to May 6th, 2025, offered enthusiasts and journalists a first in-depth opportunity to see the shooter in action, with widely viewed gameplay footage also being uploaded to Mikado's YouTube channel. The full reveal event for Sonic Wings Reunion officially took place on November 8th, 2024.

While much of the presentation focused on a multimedia showcase with live musical performances—for which the in-person game demonstration was limited—it nonetheless underscored the commitment behind the game's development and community engagement. Success has confirmed that Sonic Wings Reunion will launch in Japan on May 29, 2025.

The game will be available on major gaming platforms at launch, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Steam, ensuring accessibility for a diverse player base.

Furthermore, an arcade version utilizing Sega Corp's ALL.Net P-ras MULTI Version 3 (APM3) system will debut contemporaneously, continuing the series’ historic connection to arcade gaming culture. Sonic Wings Reunion continues the legacy of Video System's original series, which began in arcades in 1992 and earned fans worldwide through its SNES port in 1993 and sequels such as Aero Fighters 2 and Aero Fighters 3.

The franchise even made an appearance on the Nintendo 64 as Aero Fighters Assault, a title developed in conjunction with Paradigm Entertainment of Pilotwings 64 fame.

Notably, celebrated series composer Soshi Hosoi returns for this new chapter, ensuring that Sonic Wings Reunion will evoke the spirit and excitement that made the original games classics in the shoot 'em up canon. With authentic gameplay demonstrations now available and a firm release schedule locked in, Sonic Wings Reunion is poised to become a significant entry in both Success' portfolio and the broader shmup genre.
