Sonic Racing CrossWorlds Producer Takashi Iizuka on Creating the Ultimate Sonic Racing Experience for Nintendo Switch 2
Sonic Racing CrossWorlds, developed by SEGA and led by Sonic series producer Takashi Iizuka, has rapidly emerged as a focal point in the racing genre following its recent open network test.
With the title set to launch on the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, CrossWorlds aims to set a new standard for Sonic's racing legacy, drawing attention from both Sonic fans and broader gaming audiences.
The release comes at a time of heightened competition, as Nintendo has also debuted Mario Kart World on the Switch 2, further intensifying comparisons between the two flagship karting franchises.
During a recent interview, Takashi Iizuka emphasized that the team at SEGA remains focused on delivering the best possible Sonic racing game experience.
According to Iizuka, the innovative "CrossWorld" mechanic—where players are suddenly transported onto a different race track momentarily—offers a distinct twist that sets Sonic Racing CrossWorlds apart from its competitors.
"Our main objective has always been to create the ultimate Sonic racing title," he explained, noting that the unique gameplay elements are designed to appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
Responding to the timing of Mario Kart World’s launch on Nintendo Switch 2, Iizuka reflected on the team's mindset during development.
He shared that while the announcement of Mario Kart World caught SEGA's developers by surprise, such releases are typical when Nintendo introduces new hardware.
"It's fairly common for Nintendo to launch a new Mario Kart alongside new consoles, so the development team was somewhat prepared for that possibility," Iizuka noted.
Despite this, he stressed that the presence of Mario Kart had no bearing on CrossWorlds' creative vision.
"Regardless of whether Mario Kart World was on the horizon, our focus was always on building the best Sonic racing game we could.
That goal has remained unchanged."
The success of Sonic Racing CrossWorlds’ open network test highlighted the enthusiastic response from the community, with player feedback helping to shape final adjustments before release.
SEGA’s dedication to maintaining the Sonic series' reputation for fast-paced action and inventive game mechanics continues to drive development forward.
Sonic Racing CrossWorlds is poised to reinforce SEGA’s commitment to innovation in racing games and stands as a testament to the team's determination to carve out a unique identity in the midst of iconic competitors on the Nintendo Switch 2.
As the game approaches its official release and prepares for distribution via the Switch eShop, fans can look forward to a racing experience that combines classic Sonic speed with inventive new features tailored for the next generation of Nintendo hardware.
