SEGA has unveiled important technical details for Sonic Racing CrossWorlds, the highly anticipated racing title set for the next-generation Nintendo Switch 2.
This latest installment in SEGA’s acclaimed Sonic franchise promises to deliver both solo and multiplayer racing action, optimized for the advanced capabilities of Nintendo’s upcoming hardware.
Sonic Racing CrossWorlds is slated to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 as both a physical and digital title.
SEGA has confirmed that the digital version will require a 16GB download, making it advisable for players to free up adequate storage space on their Nintendo Switch 2 or compatible memory card ahead of the release date.
This size reflects a content-rich experience, on par with modern racing games in terms of assets and features.
Alongside the storage requirements, SEGA has disclosed the exact performance targets for Sonic Racing CrossWorlds on Nintendo Switch 2.
In docked mode, the game will run at a native 2560×1440 resolution (1440p) with a smooth 60 frames per second (fps) in both single-player and 2-player split-screen gameplay.
For fans embracing local multiplayer fun with a bigger group, four-player split-screen matches will similarly support 1440p resolution, with performance set at 30fps to maintain consistent gameplay across more demanding scenarios.
Handheld mode on the Nintendo Switch 2 also receives a robust showing: single and 2-player split-screen races target a crisp 1920×1080 resolution (Full HD) at 60fps.
When four players join in on the action in handheld mode, Sonic Racing CrossWorlds runs at the same 1920×1080 resolution, but with the framerate adjusted to 30fps to balance performance and playability on the go.
A SEGA spokesperson elaborated on the development approach, stating that the team’s optimization efforts have focused on delivering "a visually stunning and fluid gameplay experience tailored to each Nintendo Switch 2 play mode, ensuring that both single and multiplayer sessions meet the high standards expected by Sonic fans worldwide." While this statement has been paraphrased for journalistic clarity, it underscores SEGA’s dedication to leveraging the Nintendo Switch 2’s new hardware for enhanced graphics and responsive racing.
Sonic Racing CrossWorlds continues SEGA’s tradition of fast-paced, character-driven racing adventures.
Its release on Nintendo Switch 2 signals a commitment to embracing new hardware technologies and ensuring players receive a superior experience, whether docked at home or racing on the go.
With a 16GB digital download, precise resolution and framerate targets, and comprehensive split-screen support, SEGA appears poised to set a new benchmark for kart racing games on Nintendo platforms.
