A recent video claim that an unofficial Sonic Mania Dreamcast port is “released” has prompted confusion in the Dreamcast community.

The port — developed by homebrew contributors SonicFreak94, Falco Girgis, and Jnmartin — has been in public view since 2024 and is built from a fork of the RSDKModding 2022 decompilation of Sonic Mania.

While the project includes notable technical work such as the 3D bonus stages, developers say the Dreamcast build has not been formally packaged or published for public consumption.

The video from TheSegaGuru stated the port was finished and available, and praised the development team’s work as exceptional.

However, the project’s GitHub repository currently contains build instructions for platforms including Windows, Linux, Nintendo Switch, and Android, rather than a ready-made Dreamcast release.

That mismatch appears to be the source of the recent misunderstanding.

In a follow-up clarification, lead contributor SonicFreak94 confirmed that the Dreamcast version is “functionally there” in the codebase but emphasized that up-to-date build instructions and release materials have not been prepared.

The developer said personal circumstances have delayed those final release preparations and that it will take additional time before a public Dreamcast distribution is ready.

The port’s technical lineage is grounded in RSDKModding’s 2022 decompilation of Sonic Mania, which is the basis for many unofficial ports and projects.

As with other decompilation-based efforts, the team and RSDKModding reiterate that players must supply their own legally obtained copy of Sonic Mania’s game files.

RSDKModding has explicitly stated it does not condone using decompilation as a means of piracy and credits the original creators — Sega, Headcannon, and Evening Star — for the game’s existence.

For Dreamcast enthusiasts tracking the project: the codebase and platform build instructions are accessible on GitHub for multiple platforms, but there is no formal Dreamcast-ready release package available at this time.

Developers involved in the port have publicly acknowledged the remaining work required before a proper Dreamcast distribution can be published.
