SEGA has released Sonic Frontiers: Definitive Edition for the Nintendo Switch 2, bringing the open-world Sonic experience from Sonic Team to Nintendo’s next-generation handheld. Sonic Frontiers originally launched on November 8, 2022, across multiple platforms; this Definitive Edition is the first specific build confirmed for the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware.
According to SEGA, the Switch 2 release includes two distinct graphical modes that prioritize either frame rate or image quality. In journalistic terms, SEGA says players can choose a performance mode that targets a higher frame rate at the expense of reduced resolution, or a resolution-focused mode that favors visual fidelity while dialing back frame rate to compensate.
SEGA has not published detailed technical specifications for each mode. The publisher indicated that further technical details may follow as players and outlets test the Definitive Edition on Switch 2 hardware.
On save-data migration, SEGA confirmed that save files from the original Nintendo Switch version can be transferred to the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Sonic Frontiers: Definitive Edition. The company clarified this migration is one-way: save data cannot be moved from the Switch 2 version back to the original Nintendo Switch edition.
SEGA also listed specific downloadable content that cannot be transferred to the Switch 2 release. Items excluded from transfer (notably tied to the Japanese release) include the Inugami Korone collaboration DLC — listed as “SE: Inugami Korone,” “Koronesuki,” and “Gloves & Shoes” — as well as the Sonic Emote labeled “Koco.” Players who purchased these add-ons on the Nintendo Switch should be aware they may need to reacquire certain content for the Switch 2 edition if SEGA makes it available.
Finally, SEGA has stated there is no free upgrade path from the Nintendo Switch version to the Nintendo Switch 2 Definitive Edition. Players who own the original Switch release will need to purchase the Switch 2 version separately; SEGA’s pricing information lists a $50 purchase requirement for current Switch owners who wish to buy the Definitive Edition on Nintendo Switch 2.
Sonic Frontiers: Definitive Edition is now available on the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop. SEGA has made the launch trailer available for viewers interested in the Switch 2 build and its visual options.
