SEGA has released Sonic Frontiers: Definitive Edition for the Switch 2, delivering a standalone version of the title that packages the base game with every free downloadable update issued to date.

Developed by Sonic Team and originally launched across platforms in November 2022, Sonic Frontiers expands on the franchise’s open-zone approach and now has a dedicated Switch 2 build available through digital storefronts and a physical Game‑Key card.

After weeks of leaks and speculation, SEGA’s new release is the Switch 2-specific edition of Sonic Frontiers.

The company is offering the Definitive Edition as both a digital download on the eShop and as a physical Game‑Key card for retail.

SEGA’s rollout makes clear this is a standalone product for Switch 2 hardware: players who own the Switch (original) version cannot upgrade to the Switch 2 edition for free, but SEGA allows existing players to transfer their save data to the new release if they have a compatible backup.

What’s included

The Definitive Edition bundles Sonic Frontiers’ base campaign with the post-launch content that SEGA previously released for free.

The package lists the following components:

- Sonic Frontiers base game

- “The Final Horizon” story campaign

- “Sonic’s Birthday Bash” content update

- “Sights, Sounds, and Speed” content update

- Digital art book and mini soundtrack

- Previously released items, including Explorer’s Treasure Box, the “Monster Hunter” Collaboration Pack, “Sonic Adventure 2” shoes, and the Holiday Cheer Suit

SEGA notes that the contents of the Explorer’s Treasure Box are validated only when starting a new game, an important detail for players migrating saves.

Gameplay and platform context

Sonic Frontiers tasks players with exploring the open areas of the Starfall Islands as Sonic searches for the Chaos Emeralds, combining fast-paced traversal with an all-new combat system and large-scale enemies.

The Switch 2 release aims to leverage the console’s upgraded hardware while preserving save compatibility for players coming from the original Nintendo Switch.

SEGA also released a trailer to accompany the Definitive Edition announcement.

Fans and Switch 2 owners can find the game on the Nintendo eShop or purchase the Game‑Key card at participating retailers.
