Fatal Fury/Garou Densetsu: The Ultimate History Announced by Bitmap Books – Packed with Exclusive Interviews and Artwork

Bitmap Books has officially announced "Fatal Fury/Garou Densetsu: The Ultimate History," a meticulously crafted retrospective examining SNK's renowned fighting game franchise.

Spanning over 460 pages, the hardcover volume promises a deep dive into the rich legacy of Fatal Fury, known as Garou Densetsu in Japan, with an array of exclusive developer interviews, high-quality artwork, and rare archival material.

First introduced in the early 1990s, Fatal Fury marked SNK's ambitious foray into the competitive one-on-one fighting game genre, challenging genre-defining titles like Capcom's Street Fighter.

The original game, released on Neo Geo in 1991, was directed by Takashi Nishiyama—famed as the designer of the original Street Fighter (1987)—who joined SNK specifically to launch this influential franchise.

Across subsequent decades, Fatal Fury evolved into a pillar of SNK's enduring reputation in arcade and console gaming, with classics including Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition, Fatal Fury: First Contact, and the critically acclaimed Garou: Mark of the Wolves.

The upcoming sequel, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, underscores the series' lasting popularity.

Bitmap Books, known for their high-quality gaming retrospectives, highlights that the new tome "chronicles the complete story of Fatal Fury/Garou Densetsu with exceptional detail." The book features in-depth conversations with several of the series' creative visionaries, such as pixel artists Hitoshi Okamoto, Youichiro Soeda, and Nobuyuki Kuroki, as well as planner and designer Takeshi Kimura.

Yasuyuki Oda, chief producer of SNK’s fighting games division, contributed the book’s foreword.

The publisher also confirms unprecedented access to SNK’s vast archive—including concept sketches, promotional illustrations, and original cover art—granting fans and historians a unique behind-the-scenes look at the creative process.

Every entry in the Fatal Fury canon will be represented, from early Neo Geo arcade hits to more recent innovations and spin-offs.

Two versions of Fatal Fury/Garou Densetsu: The Ultimate History are scheduled for release: a Standard Edition priced at £34.99 and a Collector’s Edition at £54.99.

The limited-run Collector’s Edition—capped at 2,000 copies—will include a bespoke slipcase featuring iconic voice clips from the series, a curated set of A5 art cards, and a collectible postcard.

Bitmap Books confirms this edition will not be reproduced once sold out.

This comprehensive history builds upon Bitmap Books' ongoing partnership with SNK, which has recently brought fans titles such as "Metal Slug: The Ultimate History" and "The King of Fighters: The Ultimate History." Since 2022, SNK has operated under the ownership of the Saudi Arabian Misk Foundation, supporting the preservation and celebration of its storied game catalog.

"Fatal Fury/Garou Densetsu: The Ultimate History" stands out as an essential resource for fighting game enthusiasts, collectors, and industry professionals.

Offering rare insights into the development and artistry behind one of the genre’s foundational franchises, the book is poised to captivate both long-standing fans and newcomers alike when it launches later this year.
