Shantae and Shovel Knight Join Blaster Master Zero on Nintendo Switch and 3DS as Playable Characters

Inti Creates, the acclaimed developer behind several beloved action-platformers, has announced the addition of Shantae and Shovel Knight as playable EX Characters in Blaster Master Zero, bolstering the game's roster with two of indie gaming's most celebrated heroes.

This latest content update continues Inti Creates’ tradition of collaborating with notable franchises to expand the appeal and replay value of their retro-inspired titles for platforms such as the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS. Blaster Master Zero, released initially in March 2017, revitalized the classic Sunsoft series with modern graphics and gameplay enhancements while remaining faithful to the original's spirit.

Available through the Nintendo eShop, the game has garnered a dedicated following, in part due to its steady stream of post-launch content and updates.

Previous crossover characters like Gunvolt (from Azure Striker Gunvolt) and Ekoro (from Gal*Gun) have kept the side-scrolling adventure fresh for returning players. With update version 1.3, the game welcomes both Shantae, the charismatic half-genie from WayForward's critically acclaimed Shantae series, and Shovel Knight, the master of the Shovel Blade from Yacht Club Games' hit platformer.

Both characters bring their unique abilities and flair to Blaster Master Zero's sprawling subterranean levels, providing fans with new gameplay experiences. Shantae’s arrival marks her debut in the world of Blaster Master Zero, enchanting enemies with her magical powers and signature dance moves.

As described by Inti Creates, Shantae is set to "captivate mutant hordes with the power of magic and fancy dances." Following closely, Shovel Knight is ready to dig into the action, wielding his iconic shovel and bringing his trademark gameplay to the planet’s depths.

The developer described Shovel Knight as the "master of the Shovel Blade, prepared to dig his way through the adventure.” Both EX Characters are initially available for free as limited-time downloads via the Nintendo eShop.

Shantae can be downloaded at no cost from July 6th to July 19th, 2017, while Shovel Knight becomes free from August 3rd to August 16th, 2017.

After these promotional windows, both characters will be offered as paid DLC at £1.79 (or $1.99 USD) each. Blaster Master Zero’s ongoing collaborations underscore the game's standing in the indie community and Nintendo's commitment to supporting downloadable content on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS platforms.

Fans eager to enhance their games with these crossover icons should be sure to visit the eShop during the respective promotional periods.
