The September 2025 Nintendo Direct has concluded, and Nintendo has issued an extensive recap highlighting an impressive lineup of upcoming games and new initiatives for both the Nintendo Switch 2 and the current Nintendo Switch system.
The nearly hour-long presentation featured announcements from Nintendo as well as from its global development and publishing partners, setting the tone for what promises to be a landmark year in the company’s history.
Super Mario Bros.
40th Anniversary Celebrations
Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, introduced festivities commemorating the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., first released in Japan on September 13, 1985.
As part of the celebrations, the iconic Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be available as a bundled physical edition on October 2, with enhanced visuals, new content, and 4K support via a free upgrade for Switch 2 users.
Digital versions of each title will also hit the Nintendo eShop.
Miyamoto also revealed that the forthcoming animated film is officially titled "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie," premiering globally in April 2026.
The Kyoto-based Nintendo Museum will host a special light display, anniversary ticket designs, and showcase classic Mario artwork and pixel art, all in honor of this milestone.
Flagship Titles Confirmed for 2025 and Beyond
Nintendo revealed a selection of significant titles coming soon.
Highlights include:
- Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, a major new entry for the tactical RPG franchise, heading to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
- Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, set for simultaneous release on Switch 2 and Switch on December 4.
Players join Samus Aran in a new adventure with advanced technology and psychic abilities on the enigmatic planet Viewros.
Related amiibo figures and a visual retrospective art book spanning Metroid Prime 1-3 will accompany the release.
- Pokémon Pokopia brings unique gameplay as players—transformed Ditto—develop a Pokémon paradise, launching in 2026 for the Switch 2.
Donkey Kong Bananza adds new DLC adventures on DK Island for Switch 2 later this year.
- Kirby Air Riders will release with exclusive amiibo support and a promise of expanded content through a dedicated Direct.
- Mario Tennis Fever brings motion controls, an expanded roster, and new modes to Switch 2 on February 12, 2026.
- Yoshi and the Mysterious Book embarks on a new platforming story for Switch 2 in spring 2026.
Third-Party and Partner Showcase
Nintendo’s global partners unveiled several exciting additions:
- Resident Evil Requiem marks the celebrated franchise’s ninth installment, launching for Switch 2 on February 27, 2026, alongside Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village for the new hardware.
- Hades II arrives first for consoles digitally on Switch 2, with cross-save compatibility and 120 fps available in TV mode.
The original will be out for current Switch on September 25.
- Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection debuts March 13, 2026, for Switch 2, bringing turn-based RPG action with expansive exploration.
- Additional highlights include Suika Game Planet, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake, PowerWash Simulator 2, and an expanded roster of classics via the Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics app for Switch Online expansion members.
- Other titles such as Stardew Valley: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined, Dynasty Warriors: Origins, and Danganronpa 2×2 further strengthen the 2025 and 2026 catalog.
Hardware and Service Expansions
Alongside software, Nintendo announced physical and digital enhancements like new Joy-Con accessories for Virtual Boy titles, improved amiibo functionality, and the introduction of the Nintendo Today! app with fresh Kirby content.
