Sega used its Anime Expo appearance to give fans a first look at Sonic the Hedgehog: Memories and Beyond, a short-form animation produced for the Sonic 35th anniversary. Revealed during the Sonic the Hedgehog Animated Shorts: A Frame-by-Frame Retrospective panel, the ten-minute project features Sonic and his core cast and centers on Dr. Eggman upgrading Metal Sonic using Sonic's data and the Chaos Emeralds. Sega said the short will arrive later this year.
The company framed Memories and Beyond as a tightly paced piece that condenses decades of Sonic action into a brief runtime. Sega conveyed that the team approached the film with deliberate focus, trimming every scene to serve both action and emotional beats so that nothing felt extraneous. Sonic lore manager Chris Hernandez further indicated the short should be treated as part of official continuity, and that viewers will be able to identify what events preceded the short once it is released.
Memories and Beyond joins a slate of anniversary activity from Sega. The publisher recently released Sonic Frontiers - Definitive Edition on the Switch 2 and announced two physical collections for the Nintendo Switch. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds also received a free update that added Classic Sonic as a playable racer. These releases reflect Sega’s multi-pronged anniversary strategy across both digital storefronts such as the Nintendo eShop and physical retail for Switch platforms.
The Anime Expo panel also brought personnel news. Aaron Webber, who joined Sega of Japan in 2020 as Director of Strategy, Studio & Community Relations and departed the company in 2022 citing burnout, announced he will return to assist Sega of Japan in the coming year. The move underscores Sega’s continued emphasis on community-facing roles as it marks three and a half decades of Sonic content.
For fans tracking Sonic canon and platform availability, Memories and Beyond is a compact, officially endorsed entry that arrives amid broader Sonic 35th activity on Nintendo Switch hardware and the Switch 2. Sega has not announced a specific release date beyond confirming a launch later this year; more details are expected as the anniversary campaign continues.
