Sonic Racing CrossWorlds: SEGA Details Yearlong Free DLC and Crossover Characters

SEGA has announced an ambitious post-launch roadmap for Sonic Racing CrossWorlds, promising a steady stream of free content and crossover excitement throughout its inaugural year.

Developed by SEGA and available on platforms including Nintendo Switch, Sonic Racing CrossWorlds aims to reinvigorate the kart racing genre with an innovative blend of speed, style, and character-driven action. In a recent interview with prominent Japanese gaming publication Famitsu, Ken Kobayakawa and Ryuichi Taki—the creative leads on Sonic Racing CrossWorlds—confirmed that players can expect regular monthly updates.

According to the developers, SEGA will release a brand-new character and accompanying kart every month, completely free of charge.

This commitment translates into a full year of no-cost downloadable content, with twelve updates planned in total. The roster of new racers will not be limited to Sonic’s universe.

Instead, SEGA is taking a broad approach by featuring characters from several acclaimed franchises.

So far, the first wave of revealed characters includes the evocative virtual idol Hatsune Miku, Ichiban Kasuga from the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, and Joker from Persona 5, highlighting SEGA’s renowned cross-franchise collaborations.

Each character will join the existing cast with their own unique kart, adding both gameplay variety and fan appeal. Kobayakawa and Taki, speaking to Famitsu, emphasized their intention to "delight and surprise players with beloved characters beyond the Sonic series," reinforcing SEGA’s commitment to community engagement and ongoing game support.

Beyond the monthly character and kart drops, SEGA also indicated that a range of online events and additional content are in the pipeline for Sonic Racing CrossWorlds, aiming to keep the player base engaged throughout the year. To allow players an early hands-on experience, SEGA has released a free demo for Sonic Racing CrossWorlds across multiple platforms, including access via the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch users.
