Description

Dragon Ball Z: The Legend, the 1996 fighting game developed and published by Bandai, is widely recognized as one of the standout video game adaptations of Akira Toriyama’s iconic manga and anime series.

While the PlayStation version of the game, known as Dragon Ball Z: Idainaru Dragon Ball Densetsu in Japan, remained a domestic exclusive, the Sega Saturn version was released in select European territories—primarily France, Portugal, and Spain.

Despite persistent rumors and fan interest, Dragon Ball Z: The Legend never saw an official North American release, leaving a gap in the franchise’s game catalog for fans in that region. In a significant update for the retro gaming and Dragon Ball communities, the classic title is now fully playable in English thanks to the meticulous efforts of dedicated fans.

According to a report from Sega Saturn Shiro, the fan translation is the product of over two years of work led by community member wonder-inc.

This project extends the game’s accessibility beyond its original Japanese and limited European language offerings. While spearheading this ambitious translation project, wonder-inc credited Pitito, a fellow fan and creator of the Spanish language patch for Dragon Ball Z: The Legend, for contributing his expertise and time to assist with the English release.

The newly released patch translates all in-game text and assets, with the exception of the Japanese voice acting, which remains intact to preserve the game’s original character.

Wonder-inc explained that the English script is primarily adapted from the French-language edition, Dragon Ball Z: La grande légende des boules de cristal, but also incorporates direct references to the original Japanese script whenever the French translation diverged from the intended meaning. Dragon Ball Z: The Legend stands out in the franchise’s gaming history for its unique 3-on-3 team-based battle structure and faithful adaptation of saga storylines—from Saiyan to Cell arcs.

The Saturn version, often lauded for superior audiovisuals and polish compared to its PlayStation counterpart, can now be experienced by a wider international audience thanks to this community-driven translation initiative. This fan translation marks a noteworthy achievement for retro gaming preservation and highlights the enduring passion fans hold for both Dragon Ball Z and the Sega Saturn platform.

While the game remains unavailable on digital storefronts such as the Nintendo eShop and has not been officially reissued by Bandai, this patch ensures Dragon Ball Z: The Legend continues to reach new players more than 25 years after its original release.
