Spyro: A Realm Beyond — Toys for Bob Reveals New Spyro Title at Xbox Game Showcase

Toys for Bob has confirmed a new entry in the Spyro franchise, Spyro: A Realm Beyond, unveiled during Microsoft's Xbox Game Showcase.

The announcement positions the Activision-owned studio back at the center of one of modern gaming’s enduring platformer IPs.

Toys for Bob previously led development on the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, a high-profile remaster of the original late-1990s PlayStation titles, and the studio also created the Skylanders franchise.

Background and context

Spyro the Dragon began as a PlayStation franchise in 1998, developed originally by Insomniac Games.

Toys for Bob was responsible for the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, which launched in November 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and was later released on Nintendo Switch in September 2019.

The new reveal at the Xbox Game Showcase marks the first original Spyro project from Toys for Bob since the Reignited remasters.

Studio leaders on the decision to return

In a recent interview, Toys for Bob studio head Paul Yan said the studio returned to Spyro because the Reignited Trilogy demonstrated there was an active audience for the character.

Yan explained that the sales and renewed fan interest after Reignited helped make the business case when he and the team pitched the new game to Microsoft.

According to Yan, the consistent fan demand they observed at events and online strengthened their argument that a new Spyro title was timely.

Associate creative director Lou Studdert described Spyro as a character that resonates deeply with the studio.

He said the team has long admired the franchise’s blend of small-but-resilient heroics and imaginative platforming, and that those qualities made returning to the world of Spyro an obvious creative fit.

Studdert added that the studio had hoped to expand on the Reignited work and that the timing finally aligned to take the character forward.

What this means for platforms and fans

The new announcement came from an Xbox-focused showcase; Toys for Bob and Activision have not yet published a full platform list or release date.

Historically, Spyro’s modern re-releases have appeared across PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Nintendo Switch, and the studio’s comments emphasize a desire to deliver classic platforming experiences to a broad audience.

Developers noted the resurgence in interest for character-driven platformers and framed Spyro: A Realm Beyond as part of that movement.

Toys for Bob’s pedigree with Spyro and Skylanders, plus its recent Reignited work, gives the studio a clear historical connection to the property.

Fans should watch official channels—including Xbox announcements and publisher Activision statements—for confirmed release platforms, dates, and eShop or store listings as they become available.
