Description

In a significant development for the global video game industry, Russian authorities have initiated legal proceedings to prohibit the operations of Lesta Games and Wargaming in Russia.

Both companies are closely associated with the popular war simulation title, World of Tanks, a franchise renowned on platforms such as PC, console, and through digital marketplaces like the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch users outside the region. The Prosecutor General's Office of Russia has formally requested Moscow's Tagansky District Court to terminate the business activities connected to Malik Khatazhaev, owner of Lesta Games, and Viktor Kisly, owner of Wargaming.net.

According to court documents referenced in a report by RIA.ru, the state seeks to confiscate all Lesta Games' shares as revenue for the Russian government. Lesta Games, formerly a subsidiary of Wargaming, became the sole rights holder for World of Tanks in Russia after Wargaming's strategic exit from Russian and Belarusian markets in 2022.

This withdrawal followed the beginning of Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine—a move that led to the establishment of two separate versions of World of Tanks: one for Russia, managed by Lesta Games, and one for the rest of the world, managed by Wargaming.

Notably, Lesta Games continued to operate from three former Wargaming offices in Russia after the transition. Russian state media have accused both companies and their owners of conducting extremist activities, including alleged fundraising for Ukrainian medical aid.

Official statements cite campaign initiatives by Wargaming in 2023, where the developer launched charitable projects across its titles to support causes such as ambulance purchases—though these initiatives were conducted globally, with no confirmed involvement from Lesta Games. Responding to the allegations in a statement on Telegram reported by RBC, Lesta Games asserted their compliance with the law: “We have not violated anything and we have nothing to fear.

The issue is being resolved.” Wargaming, known for its long history of war simulation games and industry achievements, has distanced itself from its former Russian operations since the 2022 conflict commenced.

The company not only divested from the Russian and Belarusian markets but also undertook internal changes, including releasing a creative director linked to pro-Russian sentiments and modifying in-game and promotional materials to be more neutral. As the May court date approaches, the outcome of these legal actions could have lasting consequences for both Wargaming and Lesta Games, especially regarding their operations in Russia and the future availability of World of Tanks within the region.
