Ridge Racer Type 4, the celebrated 1998 PlayStation racing game, is about to receive the fan tribute it has long deserved.
Devolver Digital’s Andy Kelly—a respected figure in games journalism and the author behind 'Perfect Organism: An Alien: Isolation Companion'—has announced a new fanzine devoted exclusively to the revered racing title.
Titled 'One More Win,' the publication aims to reignite enthusiasm for Ridge Racer Type 4 and highlight its place at the pinnacle of the genre.
Originally launched on the Sony PlayStation (PS1) in December 1998 in Japan and internationally in 1999, Ridge Racer Type 4 was developed and published by Bandai Namco (then Namco Ltd.).
It built on the solid foundation laid by earlier series entries including Ridge Racer, Ridge Racer Revolution, and Rage Racer, but was especially noted for its innovative graphics, sophisticated drifting mechanics, and deeply immersive career mode.
Over the years, Ridge Racer Type 4 has earned acclaim from critics and fans alike for its expressive art direction, eclectic soundtrack, and rewarding gameplay loop—yet, as Andy Kelly points out, it rarely receives the widespread recognition it merits today.
"Ridge Racer Type 4 stands as one of the all-time great racing games, but it hasn’t always been given its due," Kelly observes.
His dedication to showcasing the game’s enduring appeal has materialized in 'One More Win,' a fan-driven project designed for both digital and physical distribution.
The fanzine will include retrospectives, exclusive fan art, and interviews aimed at preserving the history of Ridge Racer Type 4 and celebrating the passionate community that still surrounds it.
The Ridge Racer franchise itself holds a foundational place in gaming history, helping establish the popularity of arcade-style racers on home consoles throughout the 1990s.
Ridge Racer Type 4’s technical prowess on the PS1 was considered groundbreaking, and many in the community continue to call for an HD remaster or modern port, especially as nostalgia for classic PlayStation titles surges.
While Bandai Namco has yet to announce any plans for an HD remaster of Ridge Racer Type 4 or other titles in the series, projects like Andy Kelly’s 'One More Win' demonstrate the game’s lasting impact on racing enthusiasts and the wider gaming audience.
The fanzine is set to preserve the legacy of one of the PlayStation’s standout racers, ensuring Ridge Racer Type 4 continues to inspire discussions around classic game design, music, and innovation for years to come.
