Retroid Pocket Flip 2, the latest entry in the handheld emulation device market, has been under scrutiny after a surge of reports highlighting durability issues with its hinge mechanism.
Developed by Retroid, the Flip 2 was launched earlier this year as the successor to the original Retroid Pocket Flip, which itself faced similar concerns before its quiet discontinuation.
The Flip 2 was marketed with a 'reinforced hinge design' aimed at improving long-term reliability.
Despite these claims, users have taken to forums and social media platforms to share images and accounts of small hairline cracks appearing near the device's hinges after just weeks of use.
Initial speculation suggested only the black model of the Retroid Pocket Flip 2 was affected, but further verified user accounts—including those referencing the GC Retroid Pocket Flip 2 and other color variants—have revealed that the issue spans multiple units.
This has reignited quality control concerns surrounding the company’s products, especially as many expected that lessons from the previous generation had been addressed with the revised Flip 2 iteration.
Retroid's response came from ChrisCovers, the company’s social media manager, via an official statement on Discord.
ChrisCovers confirmed that the manufacturer is aware of the cracking hinge reports and outlined the company’s course of action: 'If you are experiencing a hinge crack on your Flip 2 device, please contact our Customer Service team via email.
We will provide a pre-paid shipping label, and once your device is received, a new unit will be cross-shipped at no additional charge.' This proactive customer support extends to all affected models while the company investigates the root cause.
ChrisCovers also referenced the company’s rigorous hinge testing protocol, stating that, 'We tested the hinge by robotic machine 50,000 times daily before release and did not encounter any failures in our tests.' Despite these assurances, Retroid emphasized its commitment to due diligence, noting that engineers and suppliers are conducting joint inspections to uncover the issue and deliver a lasting solution for customers.
The Retroid Pocket Flip 2 was released across major online retail channels and quickly gained attention as a versatile alternative to mainstream handhelds like the Nintendo Switch, thanks to its flexible emulation capabilities and accessible price point.
As the company works to resolve these hardware durability issues, it remains to be seen how the Flip 2 will maintain its reputation within the increasingly competitive retro handheld market.
With Retroid now offering free replacements for affected devices, customers are encouraged to reach out directly to their customer service channels for support.
The issue underscores the importance of robust quality control practices in new hardware launches, especially in a segment where enthusiasts expect reliability and longevity from their handheld gaming investments.
