Retroid Pocket 4 Pro Compatibility Restored with Dual Screen Add-On in Surprise Software Fix The landscape of handheld gaming continues to shift rapidly, and Retroid—the technology firm known for its pocketable retro gaming devices—has scored a major win for its fans.

Last month, Retroid announced the release of the Retroid Dual Screen, an affordable add-on designed to expand the handheld experience by connecting an extra 5.5-inch AMOLED display to a range of its devices, including the Retroid Pocket Mini, Retroid Pocket 4 Pro, and Retroid Pocket 5.

The launch promised broader versatility for retro gaming enthusiasts and portable players alike, paralleling innovations seen on platforms like the Nintendo Switch, but a hardware compatibility crisis with the Pocket 4 Pro cast doubt over the rollout. Initially, Retroid disclosed via social media that its new dual screen accessory would not function with the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro due to a fundamental 'hardware-level compatibility issue.' Specifically, engineers identified a synchronization problem between the Pocket 4 Pro's MediaTek chip and the display receiver in the add-on, resulting in PCR errors originating from output clock jitter—rendering the device incompatible.

In response, Retroid moved to issue full refunds to customers who purchased the dual screen alongside the affected model, while assuring buyers that the Pocket Mini and Pocket 5 remained untouched by the issue. However, this compatibility setback proved temporary.

In a remarkable turnaround, Retroid, in collaboration with MediaTek field application engineers, developed a software-based fix that resolved the communication fault between the two devices.

"The latest OTA update (version 1.0.0.167) is now live, making the RDS compatible with the RP4Pro," Retroid announced via a statement released on social media.

This update specifically addresses the interaction between the Pocket 4 Pro and the dual screen's display port receiver chip, fully restoring promised support for the hardware. Earlier reports from sources such as RetroGameCorps and TechDweeb had also highlighted additional concerns, most notably a latency issue where lag occurred between the paired screens.

Retroid acknowledged these findings, responding with a firmware update in August that reportedly reduced latency from a noticeable three frames to nearly zero.

This fix prompted a brief delay of three days in shipments to ensure that all units would benefit from the reduced lag and improved performance. With this latest update, Retroid not only reverses its previous position but also reassures early adopters of the Pocket 4 Pro and dual screen peripheral.

"Users who cancelled their pre-order need not have done so, as we've resolved the compatibility issue via software intervention," the company stated. The Retroid Dual Screen, which first became available in June 2025, continues to support the Retroid Pocket Mini and Pocket 5.

As Retroid maintains ongoing firmware improvements, the company further cements its reputation for responsive engineering within the competitive handheld gaming market, standing alongside industry leaders like the Nintendo Switch and similar multi-screen platforms. As of now, the updated dual screen experience is accessible through the most recent OTA update, delivering on Retroid’s commitment to user support and innovation in portable gaming technology.
