xeRAbora Brings RetroAchievements to PlayStation 2

A new homebrew utility called xeRAbora enables RetroAchievements tracking on original PlayStation 2 hardware, expanding achievement support beyond emulators.

Developed by modder hacan 359, xeRAbora integrates with the widely used Open PS2 Loader (OPL) to monitor gameplay on a modded PS2 and update a player’s RetroAchievements account via a connected PC.

RetroAchievements is known for retrofitting classic games with modern achievement lists and typically integrates with emulators to detect progress.

According to reporting from RetroDodo, xeRAbora plugs into OPL and reads the console’s memory while a game is running.

When xeRAbora detects memory flags that correspond to RetroAchievements criteria, it notifies and updates the linked RetroAchievements account in real time.

The tool also supports the established emulation workflows for users who prefer to track achievements through emulator-based methods such as the One Box approach.

Setting up xeRAbora requires a few configuration steps.

Users must install xeRAbora into their OPL installation, connect the utility to their RetroAchievements account, and establish a communication link between the PC running xeRAbora/OPL and the PS2 console.

Once configured, gameplay on native PS2 hardware will register achievement progress in the RetroAchievements system; the setup also offers an optional on-screen notification that can appear on the PS2 display itself.

Open PS2 Loader is a homebrew loader used on modded PS2 systems to run games from USB, network, or internal storage, and xeRAbora leverages OPL’s ability to run native titles to extend RetroAchievements functionality to physical hardware.

The PlayStation 2, originally released in 2000, remains one of the most commercially successful consoles — selling over 155 million units worldwide — and continues to have an active homebrew and preservation scene.

xeRAbora’s release is a technical milestone for communities that track achievements on legacy platforms, demonstrating how PC-connected tooling can bridge modern achievement ecosystems and original console hardware.

The tool and installation instructions are available through RetroAchievements community channels and the project’s distribution points as reported by RetroDodo.
