Ys III: Wanderers from Ys PS2 Fan Translation Brings English Text to Japan-Exclusive Release

A newly released fan translation has made the Japan-exclusive PlayStation 2 edition of Ys III: Wanderers from Ys playable with English text for the first time.

The patch restores readable dialogue and menus on the PS2 build, which had otherwise remained officially untranslated outside Japan.

Background and platform history

Ys III: Wanderers from Ys is the third entry in Nihon Falcom's long-running Ys action-RPG series and first appeared on Japanese home computers in 1989, with versions for platforms including the PC-8801 and PC-9801.

Over the years the title has been ported to a variety of consoles and home systems; English-language releases previously existed for a handful of ports such as the TurboGrafx-16, Super Nintendo (SNES), and Sega Genesis.

Nihon Falcom later reworked the game into Ys: The Oath in Felghana, which changed combat and expanded the scenario—this reworked version launched on PSP in the U.S. in 2010 and arrived on PC via Steam in 2012.

About the PS2 edition

The PlayStation 2 release is notable for being a faithful adaptation of the original side-scrolling Ys III presentation, closely following the Sharp X68000 build while adding upgraded visuals and voice acting.

Unlike The Oath in Felghana, which adopted a different combat style, the PS2 edition preserves the game's original sidescrolling action while offering ‘‘enhanced’’ production elements relative to the initial home-computer releases.

The fan translation project

A volunteer team that previously worked on a PS2 translation of Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand produced the new English patch.

Project lead Kaisaan handled programming, hacking, and testing; Josep served as the translation lead; and Etokapa edited graphics and the opening video.

Additional support came from hacker Everdred and testers and proofreaders wagamamalullaby, Jazzysan, and DRAGONBLEAPIECE.

The translation is hosted on GitHub, where users can find the patch files and installation instructions.

Why it matters

For preservation-minded players and series fans, this fan patch makes a historically important, Japan-only console adaptation of Ys III accessible to English-speaking audiences without altering the PS2 build’s core structure.

Those interested in installing the patch should consult the project’s GitHub repository for the files and guidance.
