Description

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Rumble, Sega’s latest entry in its beloved platforming franchise, has officially welcomed Red from the globally recognized Angry Birds series as its newest playable character.

Available as paid downloadable content (DLC) on the Nintendo Switch, this crossover marks a significant step in Sega’s efforts to bring together some of the world’s most iconic gaming properties, following its acquisition of Angry Birds developer Rovio in August 2023. Red, known for his determined attitude and classic avian design, brings a unique twist to the Super Monkey Ball experience.

When players choose Red, they’ll notice exclusive changes within the game’s vibrant courses: bananas are transformed into feathers, banana bunches become fluffy tufts, and golden bananas are now depicted as sparkling golden feathers.

This attention to detail gives the DLC a fresh look while honoring the playful spirit of both franchises. This collaboration is historic, as it marks the first time an Angry Birds character has appeared as downloadable content in a Sega-developed title.

In an official statement reflecting on this milestone, Sega confirmed that Red would make his debut using his classic art style.

Although future members of the Angry Birds cast joining Banana Rumble have not been officially announced, the arrival of Red signals promising possibilities for additional cross-brand appearances down the line. Super Monkey Ball: Banana Rumble launched exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, continuing the series’ tradition of accessible yet challenging gameplay.

In addition to the Red DLC, Nintendo Switch owners can access a demo of Banana Rumble via the Nintendo eShop.

The demo offers players a preview of the first three Adventure Mode worlds and allows save data to transfer to the full game—a convenient feature for newcomers looking to sample the latest innovation in the franchise. Since Sega completed its $776 million purchase of Rovio Entertainment in August 2023, industry watchers have anticipated more collaborative projects bridging Sega’s and Rovio’s popular IPs.

The addition of Red to Super Monkey Ball: Banana Rumble is one of the first fruits of that merger, enriching the game’s appeal and signaling Sega’s ongoing commitment to growing its crossover content library on Nintendo Switch and beyond. Super Monkey Ball: Banana Rumble is available now with Red as a paid DLC character, solidifying its status as a dynamic and evolving title for platforming fans.
