Rockstar Games has officially announced that Red Dead Redemption will launch on the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 next month, bringing one of the most celebrated open-world Western experiences to Nintendo’s next-generation platform.
With this release, fans of immersive narrative-driven games can replay or discover for the first time the epic post-Red Dead Redemption 2 saga of John Marston, enhanced with modern features for the new hardware.
Originally released in 2010, Red Dead Redemption is renowned for its sprawling depiction of the American frontier and its emotionally charged storytelling.
In this definitive version for Switch 2, players will follow former outlaw John Marston as he confronts his brutal past and seeks redemption.
Rockstar Games highlights that this edition allows players to "step into the events immediately following the blockbuster Red Dead Redemption 2, in the critically acclaimed tale of John Marston’s journey to bury his blood-stained past."
Alongside the main campaign, the release will include the beloved Undead Nightmare expansion.
This unique add-on immerses players in a zombie-horror narrative, tasking them with combating a supernatural plague.
According to Rockstar Games, "In its zombie-horror companion Undead Nightmare, fight to find a cure for the zombie plague that has overrun the frontier." Both Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare will be delivered as complete single-player experiences, incorporating all bonus content featured in the Game of the Year Edition.
The Nintendo Switch 2 port results from a partnership between Rockstar Games and development studios Double Eleven and Cast Iron Games.
Notably, the Switch 2 version will feature support for NVIDIA’s DLSS upscaling, HDR visuals, mouse controls, and a smooth 60 frames per second gameplay at high resolution.
These enhancements bring the game’s world to life in ways that leverage the Nintendo Switch 2’s new capabilities.
Importantly for current owners, Rockstar Games has confirmed that anyone who already owns Red Dead Redemption on Nintendo Switch will be able to upgrade to the new version digitally at no extra cost.
Players can also continue using their existing save data from the previous Switch version, ensuring a seamless transition to the enhanced experience.
Red Dead Redemption is set for a global digital release via the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2 on December 2, 2025.
This marks a significant addition to the Switch 2’s lineup and underlines Rockstar Games’ ongoing commitment to expanding its presence in the Nintendo ecosystem.
