Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack Adds Rayman 2 and Tonic Trouble to N64 Classics Library

Nintendo has continued to bolster its Nintendo Switch Online service by officially announcing the addition of two revered Nintendo 64 titles to its classic games lineup.

As revealed in a statement earlier today, both Rayman 2: The Great Escape and Tonic Trouble will become available for subscribers of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack tier, beginning December 17, 2025.

This marks a notable expansion for the service, which has steadily grown its catalog of retro favorites since its inception. Originally launched in 1999, Rayman 2: The Great Escape is widely recognized as a landmark 3D platformer.

Developed and published by Ubisoft, the game marked a significant evolution from the original Rayman, adopting full 3D graphics and mechanics influenced by genre leaders such as Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie.

Rayman 2 quickly gained acclaim for its imaginative level design, engaging gameplay, and technical achievements on the N64 hardware.

The title is frequently cited by fans and critics alike as one of the best installments in the Rayman franchise.

Its inclusion in the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack library is particularly notable because, while the game saw handheld re-releases on the Nintendo DS and 3DS, this is the first time in over a decade that Rayman 2 has returned to a major Nintendo platform. Tonic Trouble, also from Ubisoft and designed by Rayman creator Michel Ansel, arrives with a different legacy.

Released in the same year as Rayman 2, Tonic Trouble endured a lengthy and challenging development period spanning over three years—a considerable duration for its era.

Although it drew comparisons to Rayman for its platforming gameplay and visual style, Tonic Trouble struggled to capture the same critical enthusiasm, with reviews at the time describing it as derivative.

Nonetheless, its presence on Nintendo Switch Online offers modern gamers the chance to revisit a notable, if polarizing, piece of late-1990s gaming history. Nintendo’s official channels underscored the continued commitment to enriching the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack experience.

In their December 10, 2025 announcement, Nintendo of America highlighted the upcoming availability: “Two classic N64 games are coming soon! Rayman 2: The Great Escape and Tonic Trouble are coming to the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics app on Dec 17 for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members!” By expanding the Nintendo 64 offerings through the Expansion Pack, Nintendo cements the Switch’s reputation as a leading platform for gaming nostalgia and portability.

Nintendo Switch Online serves millions of subscribers, and the addition of these Ubisoft classics affirms Nintendo’s ongoing partnerships with third-party developers.

With Rayman 2 and Tonic Trouble joining the eShop’s virtual shelves, fans and newcomers alike can experience a slice of gaming history on modern hardware, wherever they choose to play.
