Description

Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the latest entry in Ubisoft’s long-running action-adventure series, officially launched on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in late March 2025.

While Nintendo Switch and other Nintendo hardware weren’t part of the initial release lineup, the Nintendo community remains determined to experience the franchise’s newest samurai-themed adventure on their favorite platforms.

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series has been a mainstay in the gaming industry, known for its intricate worlds and historical storytelling.

The launch of Assassin’s Creed Shadows marked yet another milestone for the publisher, expanding the saga into feudal Japan for the first time—a setting that fans have long requested.

Launching to strong reviews, outlets like Push Square awarded it an 8/10, calling the game "one of the strongest overall entries in the series." Despite missing an official Nintendo Switch launch, resourceful fans have found unconventional ways to play Assassin’s Creed Shadows on Nintendo hardware.

The most striking example comes from content creator Bob Wulff, who demonstrated the game running on a New Nintendo 3DS XL using homebrew streaming solutions.

Leveraging software tools such as Sunshine and Moonlight, Wulff streamed Assassin’s Creed Shadows from another console directly to his handheld, making for a lighthearted yet impressive technical achievement. While the 3DS rendition is not a native port—graphics are certainly reduced and control schemes adapted with touchscreen inputs—it highlights the enduring innovation present within the 3DS homebrew community.

The creative workaround brings a massive modern title to the clamshell device, echoing previous feats such as running ATLUS' Metaphor: ReFantazio on the portable in 2024.

As GamesRadar and the broader Nintendo community noted, the endeavor may not match Ubisoft’s original vision, but the ability to play one of gaming’s biggest franchises on aging hardware is a testament to fan ingenuity and the platform’s legacy. Nintendo fans continue to hope for an official Assassin’s Creed Shadows release on future hardware such as the speculated Switch 2.

For now, however, players can look to innovative community efforts that keep the spirit of Nintendo’s versatile ecosystem alive, even as the official lineup waits to expand.

Assassin's Creed Shadows remains available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with the Nintendo audience anticipating whatever the future may hold.
