Nintendo has always had a distinct edge in the world of game music, with iconic soundtracks that have captured the hearts of fans for decades.
The recent introduction of the Nintendo Music app on the Nintendo Switch gives players a fresh way to dive into these legendary tracks—offering, at last, an official, curated space for Nintendo’s remarkable library of tunes.
Since its launch, the Nintendo Music app has quickly garnered attention for its convenience and robust offering of music from classic and modern titles.
For years, fans have asked for easier access to official Nintendo soundtracks outside the confines of each game.
Now, the Nintendo Switch serves not only as a groundbreaking gaming device but also as a dedicated music player, streaming beloved scores directly from Nintendo’s own app via the Nintendo eShop.
This isn’t the first time the Nintendo Switch has allowed fans to enjoy music beyond their gameplay experiences.
In fact, a similar feature was introduced with Super Smash Bros.
Ultimate back in 2018.
Announced during that year’s Nintendo Direct, game director Masahiro Sakurai showcased the game’s massive 'Sounds' section: a collection surpassing 800 tracks, meticulously organized by series.
Players were encouraged to assemble their own playlists and were able to listen to music even while the Switch was in sleep mode.
In Sakurai’s words during the presentation, using this feature felt like 'turning your Nintendo Switch into a portable music player.'
While the Smash Ultimate music player was perhaps overlooked by some, it set the precedent for what would become a much-requested capability for Nintendo hardware.
The inclusion of the Sounds section allowed users to, for example, take their console along and continue enjoying music with the screen off—much like today’s dedicated music streaming devices.
The arrival of the official Nintendo Music app further closes the gap between how fans want to engage with Nintendo’s soundtracks and how they actually can.
With the Switch’s portability, high-quality audio output, and user-friendly interface, curating favorite playlists or revisiting classic themes from across Nintendo’s storied history is more convenient than ever before.
Nintendo’s move reinforces a growing trend in the gaming industry, where music is increasingly recognized as a central component of the player experience.
Whether through innovative in-game features like the Super Smash Bros.
Ultimate Sounds section or standalone applications, Nintendo continues to honor the musical heritage that has defined its games for generations.
The Nintendo Music app is available now via the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch.
Its launch not only celebrates decades of iconic game music but also highlights Nintendo’s commitment to evolving the Switch into a multifunctional platform for entertainment.
