Limited Run Games Announces R-Type Delta HD Boosted Physical Release for Nintendo Switch Classic shoot 'em up fans have reason to celebrate: Limited Run Games has officially confirmed a physical release of R-Type Delta HD Boosted for Nintendo Switch in Western territories.

This new edition of the acclaimed sci-fi shooter not only marks a key return for the beloved 1998 title, but also ensures that both digital and physical collectors can enjoy one of the genre’s finest entries. R-Type Delta, originally released for PlayStation in 1998, is widely recognized as a hallmark of shoot 'em up design.

Developed by Irem, the game took the gaming community by storm with its atmospheric setting, innovative mechanics, and distinctive use of 3D polygonal graphics—a first for the series.

Over two decades later, R-Type Delta HD Boosted brings this iconic experience to Nintendo Switch with enhanced visuals and exciting new features. In a recent statement, Limited Run Games outlined plans for two physical editions: a standard release and the "Full Force Edition." The premium Full Force Edition includes the game itself, an exclusive booklet, a specially designed box, a two-disc soundtrack, a fan book, lenticular and cloth posters, as well as collectible art cards.

This robust collector's package celebrates the enduring legacy of R-Type and caters to longtime series enthusiasts and new players alike. R-Type Delta HD Boosted offers visually upgraded graphics that sharpen the original’s 3D models for modern displays.

A new Practice Mode has also been added, providing players with more ways to hone their skills and master the series’ complex, tactical gameplay.

The timeless appeal of R-Type Delta is accentuated by its three selectable ships, powerful Delta Weapons, and innovative Force mechanic, reaffirming its status as a genre classic. Music remains a defining feature of this release.

The HD Boosted edition features both the classic soundtrack and new optional tracks, composed by Masahiko Ishida—known for his work on R-Type II and Image Fight—and the USP sound team, who scored the original version.

Additionally, industry legend Chris Hülsbeck, celebrated for his compositions on the C64 and Amiga versions of R-Type, contributes to this release, enhancing the atmospheric quality that fans remember so well. Set in the year 2163, R-Type Delta HD Boosted's narrative unfolds as the prototype R9aII Delta ship is dispatched to confront a world-threatening crisis instigated by the Bydo Empire.

The game’s minimalist storytelling—delivered through haunting visuals and environmental cues—remains a powerful testament to late '90s game design.

Notably, the “Delta” in the title represents several key themes: three playable ships, its status as the fourth entry in the series, and its breakthrough 3D polygonal graphics. Pre-orders for the R-Type Delta HD Boosted Nintendo Switch physical release will open on October 14, 2025.
