Dispatch on Nintendo Switch: Visual Censorship Details and Developer Response

AdHoc Studios’ narrative-driven superhero adventure, Dispatch, garnered attention on PC and PlayStation 5 in 2023 for its bold humor, mature subject matter, and unapologetically adult visuals.

This week, the acclaimed title debuts on both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, bringing its eight-episode story to a new audience via the Nintendo eShop.

But players should be aware: the Switch versions come with notable changes to visual content, reflecting Nintendo's longstanding platform guidelines. In Dispatch, players navigate a world of super-powered personalities, making pivotal choices that affect the story’s direction.

The game is known for its clever writing and provocative content.

However, while the original PC and PS5 releases offered a 'Visual Censorship' toggle—allowing players to control whether explicit imagery such as nudity or profane gestures were visible—this feature is absent from the Nintendo versions.

Instead, the censorship setting is now permanently enabled, with no option to disable it. What does this mean for Switch and Switch 2 owners? The narrative and episode structure remains unchanged—no scenes have been omitted—but any mature visuals are automatically obscured by black censor bars.

This covers not just standard adult content (such as genitals and nudity), but even more minor gestures like raised middle fingers, maintaining a consistent approach to visual moderation across the game. When approached for comment, AdHoc Studios clarified the reason behind this change: “Each platform has its own standards and requirements regarding content.

For the Switch releases, our team collaborated with Nintendo to adjust certain elements, ensuring Dispatch could launch on their systems.” The studio emphasized that, aside from these visual modifications, the core experience is still intact for Switch players. Notably, the 'Profanity Censorship' toggle remains available in the settings, so players can still choose whether or not to hear strong language.

However, one significant adjustment is found in episode four; a steamy scene that originally included graphic audio (moans, swearing, and dialogue) now plays out silently—even with profanity enabled. Nintendo’s approach to content moderation is well documented, stretching back to the removal of blood in the 1990s Mortal Kombat ports, and more recent examples such as content edits in Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore.

While exceptions exist—such as the unfiltered customization options in Cyberpunk 2077—Nintendo platforms tend to favor a curated approach that prioritizes broader accessibility. For many, these changes may not diminish the game’s appeal.

Critical reviews have noted that the automatic censor bars are often used with a sense of humor and do little to disrupt Dispatch’s engaging narrative or sharp character dynamics.

As summed up in our evaluation: Dispatch captivates with its charismatic cast, witty dialogue, and evolving plot twists—making it a standout addition to the Nintendo Switch library, even with the visual edits in place. Dispatch is available now for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 via the eShop, bringing its unique blend of superhero drama and adult-themed comedy to Nintendo’s popular platforms.
