Resident Evil Requiem: Capcom Reveals Dual Camera Perspectives for Nintendo Switch Players

Capcom continues to evolve the Resident Evil series for Nintendo Switch with the upcoming release of Resident Evil Requiem, its latest mainline installment.

In a nod to the franchise's storied history and diverse player base, Capcom is incorporating both first-person and third-person perspectives for the main campaign—a significant design choice informed by player feedback and recent trends in global gaming preferences. Resident Evil Requiem, developed by Capcom and overseen by director Koshi Nakanishi—known for his groundbreaking work on Resident Evil 7: Biohazard—will give players the freedom to choose their preferred camera perspective throughout the game's campaign.

This dual-perspective system is inspired in part by the success of downloadable content for Resident Evil Village, which introduced a third-person mode to enthusiastic community response. Nakanishi, reflecting on the intense survival horror of Resident Evil 7, mentioned that the exclusive first-person perspective "may have been too frightening for some players," prompting his decision to bring a third-person option to Resident Evil Requiem.

He underscored that the aim was "to make the game more approachable without losing the essence of tension and immersion" that defines the series. During recent gameplay demonstrations at major industry events—Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show (TGS)—Capcom observed distinct preferences among players depending on region.

In an interview with Denfaminicogamer, Nakanishi noted, "Western players often gravitate towards the first-person perspective, influenced by a long history of first-person shooters like DOOM.

Conversely, Japanese players tend to prefer the third-person viewpoint, reflecting traditions from games such as Dragon Quest." However, Nakanishi cautioned that these patterns are evolving.

He highlighted that younger Japanese gamers are increasingly exposed to first-person games, naming titles like Minecraft and Apex Legends as popular choices, pointing towards a potential shift in long-standing preferences.

"While trends exist, the landscape is always changing as players try new genres and platforms," the director explained. Resident Evil Requiem is poised to appeal to both long-time fans of the series' classic over-the-shoulder perspective as seen in Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4, as well as newcomers who may prefer the immersive fear delivered by first-person gameplay.

By offering both options, Capcom aims to broaden the title’s reach when it launches for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms. With no confirmed release date as of yet, Resident Evil Requiem remains a highly anticipated entry in the acclaimed survival horror franchise.

Capcom’s decision to implement camera perspective flexibility underlines its commitment to player agency and global accessibility—cementing Resident Evil’s legacy as one of gaming’s most adaptable series.
