Astronaut Pikachu has moved from promotional concept to an actual flown plush following a collaboration between The Pokémon Company International and the European Space Agency (ESA).

The costumed Pikachu accompanied French astronaut Sophie Adenot aboard ESA operations from April 11 to June 27, 2026, and footage and images of the plush floating in the cabin have been published by official channels.

The initiative ties Pokémon’s global brand reach to ESA’s public engagement objectives.

ESA Communications head Anne-Sophie Bradelle explained that working with Pokémon offers a creative channel to connect wide audiences with space and to support ESA’s Strategy 2040 goal of inspiring young people.

In journalistic terms, Bradelle emphasized that the partnership leverages Pokémon’s imaginative appeal to bring space topics to new and younger audiences across Europe.

Sophie Adenot documented the journey in a short video released by The Pokémon Company and the ESA, showing Astronaut Pikachu aboard the spacecraft during the April–June mission window.

The imagery is presented on the Official Pokémon YouTube channel and supported by information on the ESA website.

Merchandise and in-game tie-ins

The collaboration is accompanied by official merchandise, including plushes and Pokémon Trading Card Game accessories, offered through official channels such as the Pokémon Center.

The companies have confirmed the product line and showcased it alongside the mission content on their respective websites.

Coinciding with World Space Week (October 4–11, 2026), The Pokémon Company and Niantic have announced an in-game event for Pokémon GO.

During the World Space Week event, a new costumed Pokémon — Astronaut Pikachu — will appear in-game.

Players may encounter Astronaut Pikachu in raids and Timed Research, and there is a confirmed chance to encounter a Shiny variant for those who are lucky, per the Pokémon GO announcement.

Context for Nintendo and Pokémon audiences

While Astronaut Pikachu is primarily a merchandising and public engagement effort, the Pokémon brand maintains a strong presence across Nintendo platforms, including Nintendo Switch releases and eShop storefronts for allied titles.

This collaboration further amplifies Pokémon’s cross-platform reach, spanning physical merchandise, mobile gaming with Pokémon GO, and audiovisual content promoted through official channels.
