DK64Rekongpiled, an unofficial Recompiled PC port of Rare’s Donkey Kong 64, is officially available as of Mon 31st Aug 2026.
The project—built by Rainchus and Ballaam with contributions from Killklli and Umed—is based on the N64: Recompiled work by Wiseguy and targets Windows, macOS, and Linux.
The port lets players run the 1999 Nintendo 64 title natively on modern PC platforms, provided they supply a legally acquired copy of the original ROM to supply copyrighted assets.
Project background and release
The port was first revealed in a YouTube video from creator 2dos on Mon 29th Jun 2026.
Developers subsequently published the initial release on GitHub on Mon 31st Aug 2026, with downloadable builds for Windows, macOS, and Linux and an accompanying setup guide on the project website.
The team has stated the port relies on the N64: Recompiled framework and decades of community experience working with Donkey Kong 64’s back end.
Key features and compatibility
The Recompiled port brings several technical and quality-of-life improvements to the N64 original: higher frame rates, widescreen and high-resolution support, reduced input delay, and native PC compatibility.
The release also includes support for a range of compatible mods, including Tag Anywhere, a fix for the Beaver Bother minigame, and an option to begin runs with all Kongs unlocked.
The developers have indicated additional mod support, such as the DK Randomiser, will be integrated in time.
On development approach (paraphrased)
Developers emphasised that the port was produced through experienced, hands-on work with DK64’s codebase rather than relying on recent trends in AI-assisted recompilation.
In their words, the project reflects years of specialised backend experience applied to the game’s recompiled code.
How to get it
The latest builds and source are available on GitHub for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Users must provide their own legally obtained Donkey Kong 64 ROM to run the recompiled executable.
A step-by-step setup guide is included with the release materials.
Legacy context
Donkey Kong 64 originally launched for Nintendo 64 in 1999.
At release, outlets such as IGN and GameSpot gave the title 9/10 scores.
More recently, Nintendo Life reviewed the Switch Online + Expansion Pack N64 release and scored it 7/10, noting it remains enjoyable but can feel repetitive.
This release provides PC players and modders a supported Recompiled foundation for Donkey Kong 64 on modern hardware.
