PopCap, the renowned developer behind the iconic Plants vs.
Zombies franchise, is set to relaunch its fan-favorite tower defense title with a modernized remaster, Plants vs.
Zombies Replanted.
Scheduled for release on October 23, 2025, the remaster will be available for both Nintendo Switch 2 and the original Nintendo Switch, marking the highly anticipated return of a classic to Nintendo hardware.
Originally launched in 2009, Plants vs.
Zombies quickly established itself as a household name in casual gaming, noted for its distinctive blend of strategy, humor, and accessible gameplay.
With Plants vs.
Zombies Replanted, PopCap advances well beyond a simple port.
The new version introduces enhanced local co-op and competitive player-versus-player (PVP) options, alongside fresh game modes titled 'Rest in Peace' and 'Cloudy Day.' Players can also look forward to an art gallery featuring never-before-seen concept art, bringing new depth to the franchise’s celebrated creativity.
Commenting on the remaster, PopCap General Manager Nick Reinhart explained that the project offers the studio an opportunity to "reinforce what made Plants vs.
Zombies beloved in the first place, and recast that experience for today's players." Jake Neri, Executive Producer, described Plants vs.
Zombies Replanted as the "definitive PvZ remaster." Neri added that the remaster succeeds in "maintaining the spirit and charm of the original, while introducing a renewed vibrancy that will help it endure for decades to come."
Discussing why now is the right time for the reboot, Neri pointed to ongoing demand from the Plants vs.
Zombies community.
"For quite some time, players have been asking for a remaster of the game," Neri said.
"As PopCap recently celebrated the franchise’s sixteenth anniversary, the team felt it was a fitting moment to revisit and expand upon the original."
When asked about the direction of the franchise, Reinhart clarified that this is not a complete reset.
"It’s really about reconnecting with our foundational values, considering the types of games we want to create, and honoring the essence of what made PvZ special," he said.
Reinhart emphasized the timeless appeal of Plants vs.
Zombies and highlighted the remaster as an opportunity to introduce the series to new players while rekindling nostalgia among longtime fans.
"In a time where many are seeking comfort and lighthearted fun, this felt like the perfect opportunity to bring back a bit of joy and whimsy to the gaming community," he concluded.
Plants vs.
Zombies Replanted is poised to become a key release for both Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch this fall.
With newly added features, modes, and attention to the franchise’s legacy, PopCap aims to satisfy both franchise veterans and a new generation of players eager to experience the definitive version of an enduring classic.
