Sega veteran Yasushi Yamaguchi, renowned for creating Sonic the Hedgehog’s iconic sidekick Miles "Tails" Prower, recently shared his ambitious ideas for a potential remake of the classic JRPG Phantasy Star II.

In a detailed interview with Japanese gaming publication Beep21, Yamaguchi outlined how modern technology could breathe new life into the series, which has captivated fans since its debut on the Sega Mega Drive in 1989. Phantasy Star II is recognized as a pillar of 16-bit RPGs, making waves with its intricate narrative and extensive world building.

The franchise originally launched on the Sega Master System in 1987, and its sequels on the Mega Drive, including Phantasy Star II, III, and IV, continued to influence RPG design long after.

After transitioning from traditional role-playing experiences to the online realm with the groundbreaking 2000 Dreamcast release of Phantasy Star Online, the series most recently saw new content in 2021 with Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis. Yamaguchi, who has also been credited as Judy Totoya, revealed in the interview his enduring desire to revisit Phantasy Star II with a full 3D remake.

He explained that he would adopt a style reminiscent of Genshin Impact, one of today’s most visually admired games, while staying faithful to the anime-influenced aesthetic crafted by celebrated director Nobuyoshi Habara.

“A remake today could achieve an expressive, anime-inspired quality that was impossible previously,” Yamaguchi noted, reflecting on the creative challenges faced during the original Mega Drive development in 1989. Significantly, Yamaguchi expressed a wish for the remake to deliver a more immersive and cinematic experience.

Drawing inspiration from Naughty Dog’s acclaimed Uncharted series, he emphasized how a modern Phantasy Star II could captivate audiences with dynamic storytelling and polished cutscenes.

“Working within the hardware constraints of the late ’80s limited our ability to fully realize those cinematic ambitions,” Yamaguchi explained.

“With modern hardware such as the Nintendo Switch, it’s now possible to deliver a spectacle and narrative depth akin to leading contemporary titles.” The Phantasy Star franchise’s incredible legacy—spanning from classic JRPG roots to pioneering online multiplayer—has secured its place in gaming history.

While there is no official confirmation of a Phantasy Star II remake in development, Yamaguchi’s vision highlights both the timeless appeal of the series and the possibilities advanced by current-generation platforms like the Nintendo Switch and evolving digital storefronts such as the Nintendo eShop. For long-time fans and newcomers alike, the prospect of a modern, cinematic Phantasy Star II stands as a testament to the enduring power of classic games—and the creativity of the developers who continue to inspire new generations.
