Masters of Albion: Peter Molyneux Announces New God Game With Fable Composer and Media Molecule Co-Founders
Long-time industry veteran Peter Molyneux has made headlines once again, officially unveiling his studio 22cans' latest project, Masters of Albion, during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024.
This ambitious new god game brings together a powerhouse team including Fable composer Russell Shaw, Media Molecule co-founders Mark Healey and Kareem Ettouney, and former Lionhead Studios figures such as Iain Wright, the level designer for Fable II.
Hosted by Geoff Keighley, the event showcased a fresh start for Molyneux as he revisits the genre he helped pioneer over two decades ago.
Molyneux's extensive legacy in game development is well-known, having created acclaimed titles such as Dungeon Keeper, Black & White, and the Fable series.
Masters of Albion is positioned as a spiritual successor to these genre-defining classics.
Speaking at Gamescom, Molyneux introduced the new title with characteristic candor, remarking that after experimenting with mobile games—including The Trail and the controversial NFT-focused Legacy—he felt the need to "come home" to more traditional PC development.
The self-funding for Masters of Albion comes, in part, from the revenue generated by Legacy's NFT project, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz.
Reflecting on his career in a recent interview, Peter Molyneux emphasized that he views Masters of Albion as a personal milestone.
He shared, in paraphrased terms, "I've never created a truly great game or received a perfect score, and at this point in my life, I want to focus my efforts on a project that encapsulates my best ideas.
The influences of my previous work are a driving force behind Masters of Albion."
Debuting with a two-minute trailer at Gamescom, Masters of Albion showcased a mix of god game simulation, city-building, tower defense, and third-person combat—themes that recall Molyneux's earlier innovations.
According to the official Steam page, players are tasked with building their world during the day, defending it by night, and customizing aspects as detailed as clothing and food choices for their inhabitants.
The game introduces the unique mechanic of letting players possess characters at will, blending creative construction with direct, action-driven gameplay.
22cans plans to launch Masters of Albion in Early Access on PC via Steam sometime in 2025, as confirmed by GamesIndustry.biz and UK publication Eurogamer.
The project channels the collective talents of Molyneux, Shaw, Healey, Ettouney, and Wright, all bringing years of experience from their work at Lionhead Studios, Media Molecule, and beyond.
Masters of Albion promises to reintroduce the god game genre to a modern audience while honoring the legacy of the celebrated developers behind it.
Industry veterans and PC gaming fans alike will be watching closely as the project moves toward its anticipated Early Access debut.
