Village in the Shade lands on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 on October 27, bringing a deliberate blend of pastoral simulation and supernatural suspense from developer Nippon Ichi Software and publisher NIS America.

Described by promotional materials as a hand-painted, cozy farming sim set in a traditional Japanese community, the title pairs daytime chores—farming, livestock care, fishing and seasonal festivals—with a night cycle that reveals the village’s darker secrets.

Hands-on at PAX 2026

At the NIS America booth during PAX 2026 I played a timed demo of Village in the Shade.

A representative explained that demo objectives were marked by difficulty and that sessions concluded either when the player character died or when the in-game clock reached 5:00 a.m.

The booth staff also noted a choice between daytime, relaxed play and nighttime challenges during the demo.

Day versus night: gameplay overview

By day, Village in the Shade supports a broad suite of farming-sim features familiar to fans of the genre: seasonal festivals such as matsuri, cherry blossom viewing in spring, home decor and crafting from farm materials.

The game includes a Peaceful Life Mode for players who prefer to experience Kagatsu Village without the nocturnal threats.

By night, however, the village changes tone.

During my demo I encountered yokai, ghosts and other supernatural entities that patrol with a limited cone of vision; the demo clearly telegraphed that line of sight with visible light cones.

I attempted to use a pickaxe I had equipped, and NIS America staff informed me that farm tools were not usable as weapons during the demo.

That restriction left the playable character effectively defenseless in the session I played—an intentional design choice for that build that heightened vulnerability in a way reminiscent of older atmospheric horror titles.

The demo also featured a shrine where players could offer gathered herbs for benefits, emphasizing exploration and resource collection alongside stealth mechanics.

Presentation, scale and art

The hand-painted art direction and environmental scale were standout elements in the demo: dense village layouts with many alleyways created tense roaming at night, while daytime sequences aim to provide a relaxed, community-driven experience.

Editions, pricing and availability

Product images associated with retailer listings indicate the Switch 2 version will use a Game Key-Card format while the Switch release will be a physical cartridge.

Conclusion

Village in the Shade positions itself as a hybrid between cozy farming simulation and slow-burn horror, with both a Peaceful Life Mode and a night mode that prioritizes stealth and vulnerability.

With an October 27 release on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, the title will be readily accessible via retail and online preorder channels for players interested in this unusual genre crossover.
