Nintendo has officially ceased online multiplayer support for Steel Diver: Sub Wars on the Nintendo 3DS, signaling another significant step in the company’s phased withdrawal from legacy online services.
The announcement arrives as Nintendo prepares to fully discontinue 3DS and Wii U online functionalities on April 8th, 2024, following a long-standing tradition of supporting its platforms well beyond their initial life cycle.
Steel Diver: Sub Wars, developed and published by Nintendo, was first released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2014 and quickly gained attention as one of the platform’s distinctive free-to-play experiences.
The game offered asynchronous online submarine battles and became a fan favorite thanks to its strategic gameplay and unique naval theme.
Upon launch, the title was praised for revitalizing the Steel Diver franchise, earning an 8/10 rating from prominent reviewers who commended Nintendo’s decision to successfully reimagine the series as a flagship free-to-play title on the Nintendo eShop.
Trouble for Steel Diver: Sub Wars’ online servers began in September 2023, when Nintendo commenced emergency maintenance that ultimately rendered its online functionality inaccessible.
In an official update, the company stated that despite continued efforts, it was unable to resolve the underlying issues with the online service.
As a result, the decision was made to end online play for the title ahead of the full 3DS and Wii U network shutdown scheduled for early April 2024.
A statement from Nintendo clarified the rationale behind the early closure: "Given the challenges in restoring online play and the upcoming end of the 3DS and Wii U online services, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue Steel Diver: Sub Wars’ online features.
We appreciate our players’ enthusiasm and thank everyone who enjoyed online battles over the years."
The shutdown marks a bittersweet milestone for devoted fans, some of whom had hoped for a final round of online matches.
It also serves as a reminder of the gradual sunsetting of classic Nintendo platforms.
Steel Diver: Sub Wars remains playable offline, with its single-player campaign and local multiplayer still available for 3DS users.
As Nintendo sharpens its focus on current and future hardware, the conclusion of services like Steel Diver: Sub Wars’ online play underscores the company’s ongoing support and evolution within the gaming landscape.
Those still interested in experiencing this entry in the Steel Diver series can access it via the Nintendo 3DS eShop while it remains available.
