Authorities have apprehended Isaac Lapidus, a 34-year-old New York City resident, on charges related to the sale of counterfeit Nintendo Switch accessories via the Amazon marketplace.
According to Fox 5 New York, Lapidus is accused of importing fake Nintendo products from China and the Philippines, storing them at a local warehouse, and subsequently selling them on Amazon for profit.
The Nassau County District Attorney’s Office reports that hundreds of thousands of counterfeit items—including Nintendo Switch docking stations, charging adapters, and Pokémon GO Plus accessories—were distributed in this operation.
District Attorney Anne Donnelly described the network as 'small but sophisticated' in its execution.
She revealed that the case came to their attention following a surge of customer complaints to Amazon regarding suspicious Nintendo Switch accessories.
These reports prompted an official investigation.
Donnelly explained to Fox 5 New York that counterfeit Nintendo products were packaged similarly to authentic accessories and sold at marginally lower prices.
This practice led to confusion among consumers who believed they were purchasing legitimate, Nintendo-licensed hardware.
Donnelly emphasized the potential risks associated with counterfeit electronic accessories, stating customer safety is of utmost importance.
In her words, these unregulated products could pose significant hazards, including the risk of fire in consumers’ homes, a common danger with uncertified electronics.
Thanks to the collaboration between Amazon’s fraud detection teams and law enforcement, authorities swiftly halted Lapidus’s distribution of fake Nintendo goods via the eShop and other online storefronts.
If convicted of these offenses, Lapidus could face a sentence of up to 15 years in prison.
Currently, he has been released with an ankle monitoring device pending trial.
He is required to appear in court on September 18, 2025, as the judicial process continues.
This incident highlights ongoing challenges for Nintendo and its partners in combating counterfeit products sold through major e-commerce platforms.
The Nintendo Switch, which has sold over 125 million units worldwide as of early 2024, remains an appealing target for counterfeiters eager to exploit the market’s demand for accessories and hardware.
Amazon, in response to increased scrutiny and complaints, has reiterated its commitment to removing fraudulent listings and working closely with intellectual property holders.
As Nintendo continues to innovate with its hardware and software platforms, the company’s vigilance against counterfeiting remains a crucial aspect of protecting both its brand and its customers.
Consumers are advised to purchase official Nintendo Switch accessories exclusively from authorized retailers in order to ensure safety and product reliability.
