Nintendo has announced the upcoming removal of Super Soccer (known in Japan as Super Formation Soccer) from the Nintendo Switch Online Super Famicom service.
The digital delisting is scheduled for March 28, 2025, marking a rare instance of a title being withdrawn from the popular retro games library available to Switch subscribers.
First launched for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1991, Super Soccer was developed by Human Entertainment and published by Spike Chunsoft.
The game gained notoriety as one of the early soccer simulations on the console and remains a nostalgic favorite among long-time Nintendo fans.
After decades of dormancy, the title made its way to the Switch Online Super Famicom service in Japan in September 2019, representing one of the few third-party contributions to Nintendo's retro game catalog at that time.
This removal, initially confirmed on Nintendo's official Japanese customer service accounts and website, applies to both the Super Famicom and the Western release, Super Soccer.
Nintendo's statement clarified: "Distribution of 'Super Formation Soccer' (Spike Chunsoft) on the Super Famicom Nintendo Switch Online service will end at 10:00 AM on Friday, March 28, 2025.
After this, even users who have previously downloaded the Super Famicom Nintendo Switch Online app will lose access to this title."
No additional information or reasons for the removal have been provided by Nintendo or Spike Chunsoft.
The delisting currently applies only to the Japanese Super Famicom library, and there has been no word yet regarding the status of Super Soccer on the North American or European Switch Online SNES libraries.
Fans are encouraged to take advantage of the game while it remains available.
Since its debut on the Nintendo Switch Online service in 2019, Super Soccer has stood out as a notable third-party classic in an otherwise first-party-dominated lineup.
Nintendo Switch Online continues to provide gamers access to a selection of SNES, NES, and other retro titles, available through its paid eShop subscription service.
Subscribers are accustomed to seeing the catalog grow, making this announcement of a removal especially significant.
As always, Nintendo Life and leading outlets will monitor for updates regarding any changes to the Nintendo Switch Online SNES catalog, and inform readers should Nintendo expand this removal beyond the Japanese service.
For now, fans of Super Soccer and its developer, Spike Chunsoft, will have until late March to revisit the iconic soccer title on their Nintendo Switch consoles.
