Description

Nintendo Switch has officially surpassed 150 million units sold worldwide, according to the company’s latest financial results published on February 4, 2025.

The hybrid console’s remarkable journey continues, positioning it just behind the Nintendo DS in the race for the highest-selling gaming hardware in the company’s history. The financial report from Nintendo confirms that, as of December 31, 2024, global sales of the Nintendo Switch reached 150.86 million units since its launch in March 2017.

During the most recent quarter—from October 1 to December 31, 2024—the Switch family of systems accounted for 4.82 million units sold.

Breaking down those numbers reveals that the Nintendo Switch OLED Model led the pack with 2.57 million units, followed by the standard Nintendo Switch at 1.48 million, and the Nintendo Switch Lite with 0.76 million units sold. With these figures, the Nintendo Switch now trails the Nintendo DS—which holds a lifetime sales figure of 154.02 million—by fewer than four million units.

However, the PlayStation 2’s all-time record of over 160 million units still remains out of reach. Sales have declined compared to previous years.

In the same holiday quarter last year, Nintendo reported 6.9 million Switch units sold, underscoring a gentle slowdown in the system’s eighth year on store shelves.

Software sales also reflected this trend, with 53.7 million titles sold in Q3 2024, compared to 66.87 million sold during the same period the previous fiscal year. In light of these trends, Nintendo has revised its annual hardware sales forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2025, adjusting it downward from 12.5 million to 11 million units.

The company attributed the previous fiscal year’s stronger performance to blockbuster releases such as 'The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom' and 'Super Mario Bros.

Wonder', both of which significantly boosted hardware and software demand in 2023. Looking ahead, Nintendo generated a surge of anticipation in January when it revealed a teaser for its next console, widely referred to as Switch 2.

While the current Switch appears unlikely to surpass PlayStation 2’s hardware sales record, its enduring market performance through multiple hardware iterations—standard, OLED, and Lite—underscores its pivotal role in Nintendo’s modern success. For investors and fans alike, the Nintendo Switch’s sustained momentum and proximity to the DS’s sales benchmark represent a landmark achievement.

All eyes now turn to Switch 2, with expectations high for new game announcements and hardware innovation to shape the company’s future growth. For additional details, readers can consult Nintendo's official financial results available at nintendo.co.jp.
