Nintendo's legacy of hardware success continues with the Nintendo Switch 2, which has achieved a landmark sales milestone in Japan.
According to a recent report from Yomiuri, drawing from reputable sales data by Famitsu, the new-generation hybrid console has set a fresh record for first-month sales in Japan, surpassing the previous benchmark held by Sony’s PlayStation 2.
Famitsu, a renowned source for Japanese gaming industry data, aggregates sales figures from over 3,000 retail stores across the country.
Their latest analysis indicates that the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold at least 1,538,260 units within its debut month.
This figure not only establishes a new record for domestic console launches but also overtakes the PlayStation 2’s initial month sales of 1,134,862 units, an impressive mark that stood unchallenged for years.
Comparatively, the previous record-holder among Nintendo platforms was the Game Boy Advance, which moved 1,367,433 units during its own launch month.
Close behind was the Nintendo DS, with 1,269,846 units sold.
The original Nintendo Switch, which would later become Japan’s all-time best-selling gaming platform, sold 556,633 units during its launch month in 2017, highlighting the unprecedented demand for its successor.
While Nintendo itself has not yet released official detailed sales breakdowns for the Switch 2 beyond the launch period, the company did previously confirm that global sales reached 3.5 million units within less than a week of release.
Industry watchers anticipate updated figures to be shared in the forthcoming Nintendo financial results briefing, which is scheduled for next week.
These figures illustrate not only Nintendo’s enduring dominance in the Japanese console market but also a strong consumer appetite for the innovative features brought by the Nintendo Switch 2.
As the company continues to expand its hardware legacy, all eyes will be on Nintendo’s upcoming official report for further insights on the Switch 2’s international performance and ongoing demand within Japan.
