Donkey Kong Bananza: Kenta Motokura Explains the Iconic Character’s Silent Role on Nintendo Switch

Nintendo's enduring ape hero returns to the spotlight in Donkey Kong Bananza, the latest installment for the Nintendo Switch.

While Donkey Kong has been a familiar face in countless Nintendo games over the decades, his presence has recently expanded beyond gaming, grabbing the attention of audiences with a prominent role in the blockbuster The Super Mario Bros.

Movie.

Yet, as Donkey Kong Bananza producer Kenta Motokura recently explained, the character differs significantly between these two versions, providing insight into Nintendo’s creative process and the ways players connect with iconic figures. In an in-depth discussion with IGN, Motokura detailed his approach to Donkey Kong’s portrayal in Donkey Kong Bananza.

When asked whether he imagines Donkey Kong speaking in his own mind during development, Motokura affirmed that, in his vision, the character communicates internally.

However, Motokura stressed that the game’s design intentionally keeps Donkey Kong silent, positioning him as an extension of the player.

"Within the game, Donkey Kong serves as a mirror to the player, and intentionally does not speak, giving players room to project their own feelings and decisions onto the character," Motokura explained.

This creative choice allows players to gauge Donkey Kong’s emotions through expressions and game scenarios, fostering a more immersive, personal experience. Motokura contrasted this silent approach with the version seen in The Super Mario Bros.

Movie, where Donkey Kong is a fully voiced, outgoing personality.

"The game’s Donkey Kong is fundamentally different from the movie version.

In the game, the silence invites deeper player investment, while in the movie, the character’s voice and personality are clearly defined," Motokura noted.

He added that Donkey Kong in Bananza does not speak or display the comedic vocal style of actor Seth Rogan, who brought the animated version to life on the big screen.

"I can’t really imagine Donkey Kong in Bananza talking like Seth Rogan," Motokura remarked. To balance the silent protagonist, Motokura pointed to the supporting character Pauline.

"Because Donkey Kong doesn’t speak in the game, Pauline’s voiced role is crucial.

She delivers hints, expresses emotions, and creates opportunities for the player to empathize—enhancing the overall narrative experience on the Nintendo Switch," Motokura said. Donkey Kong Bananza continues Nintendo's tradition of crafting engaging adventures for the Switch, available now via the eShop.

With its thoughtful character design and nuanced storytelling, the game stands as a testament to the developer’s deep understanding of player immersion.

As Donkey Kong celebrates new milestones on the Nintendo Switch and beyond, this fresh perspective on his silent role underscores why the character remains a beloved staple for both new and returning fans.
