Nintendo's recent Switch 2 slate has leaned heavily on remakes of classic N64 titles, and fans are already asking whether The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask could be next.

This year Nintendo released a Star Fox remake in June that has sold more than one million units, and this week the company followed with a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Switch 2 hardware.

Those releases illustrate Nintendo's current focus on revisiting legacy IP for its next-generation platform.

Nate Bihldorff, Nintendo's senior vice president of product development and publishing, framed the company's strategy during an interview with Polygon.

Paraphrasing his comments, Bihldorff said Nintendo treats new entries and remakes with equal priority: the company values creating wholly new experiences in its franchises while also delivering updated versions of beloved games so players who never experienced the originals can enjoy them on modern hardware.

That balanced approach helps explain why Nintendo has invested in high-profile remakes early in the Switch 2 lifecycle.

The Star Fox title's more-than-one-million copies sold is a measurable success for the strategy; critics and many players have responded positively to the remakes released so far.

Remakes also give Nintendo strong content to promote through channels it has used historically, including Nintendo Direct presentations and the Nintendo eShop storefront.

Fans and outlets have naturally pointed to Majora's Mask as an obvious candidate for a remake given its narrative and mechanical ties to Ocarina of Time.

Nintendo has not issued an official announcement about Majora's Mask for Switch 2 or confirmed development plans.

As of the most recent coverage, the company continues to emphasize both new projects and remakes as part of its publishing roadmap.

For industry watchers, the performance of early Switch 2 remakes will be a key metric to watch: sales figures, critical reception, and platform uptake will all influence future decisions.

Until Nintendo makes a formal statement, Majora's Mask remains a frequently discussed possibility rather than a confirmed project.
