Nintendo and The LEGO Group have expanded the LEGO Super Mario ecosystem with a fresh wave of expansion sets and collectible blind-bag character packs, building on the interactive line tied to Nintendo’s flagship IP. The new additions follow the initial LEGO Super Mario Starter Course and related sets that were slated to arrive on August 1, 2020, and continue the partnership between Nintendo and The LEGO Group to bring physical Mario-themed playsets to market. The recently shared video reveal showcases multiple expansion packs centered on Mushroom Kingdom favorites. Alongside the Piranha Plant Power Slide Expansion Set and Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle Expansion Set—first announced in April—the announced lineup includes the Guarded Fortress Expansion Set; Mario’s House & Yoshi Expansion Set; Toad’s Treasure Hunt Expansion Set; Desert Pokey Expansion Set; Whomp’s Lava Trouble Expansion Set; and Boomer Bill Barrage Expansion Set. Nintendo also provided a closer look at the Monty Mole & Super Mushroom Expansion Set in April as part of the ongoing rollout. Nintendo characterized the additional character packs as a means to enhance the overall play experience, adding variety and new interactions for LEGO Mario courses. These add-ons were positioned to complement the core sets arriving alongside the official August 1, 2020 release window for the first wave. In addition to the expanded buildable environments, Nintendo confirmed ten collectible enemy characters available in blind-bag Character Packs. The set of buildable enemy figures and their action tags comprises Paragoomba, Fuzzy, Spiny, Buzzy Beetle, Bullet Bill, Bob-omb, Cheep Cheep, Blooper, Urchin and Peepa. Nintendo noted that the blind-bag format is intended to introduce an element of surprise for collectors and players. Though LEGO Super Mario is a physical product line rather than a Nintendo Switch title, coverage of the launch and subsequent announcements has regularly appeared alongside Nintendo news—including Direct updates and eShop releases—because of the brand alignment with Mario and Nintendo’s broader content strategy. For collectors and fans tracking availability, pre-order options and official retail listings were being collected by retailers ahead of the August 1, 2020 release. The new expansion wave extends the LEGO Super Mario product family and provides additional modular components and characters for builders looking to expand their Mushroom Kingdom layouts.
