During a recent financial results question-and-answer session, Nintendo leadership reiterated that developing "new forms of play" through tight hardware-and-software integration remains a top management priority.

The comments — made by Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa and senior executives Shinya Takahashi and Ko Shiota — directly addressed whether the company’s emphasis on innovation has waned since breakthrough hardware such as the Wii in the mid-2000s.

Furukawa was clear that Nintendo’s strategic focus has not diminished.

He said the company continues to prioritize creating unique entertainment experiences through integrated hardware and software development, calling that capability the company’s lifeblood.

Furukawa emphasized that this integrated approach has enabled Nintendo to deliver distinctive play experiences over roughly the last 40 years and said the company will continue to use that approach to leverage its strengths.

Takahashi explained the practical side of that work, describing how Nintendo’s hardware and software teams collaborate to design new gameplay first and then identify the hardware features needed to realize that experience.

He said the teams do not start with technology for its own sake; they conceive an engaging gameplay idea, determine the necessary hardware functions, and then maximize those features.

Takahashi added that Nintendo is conducting trial-and-error work to realize new forms of play for the successor to the Nintendo Switch.

Ko Shiota reinforced that this culture of cross-disciplinary collaboration is long-standing at Nintendo.

He noted that although only a small number of concepts ultimately become commercial products after extensive iteration, Nintendo’s management continues to invest in exploring ideas that could yield new forms of enjoyment.

Shiota affirmed the company’s commitment to supporting those development efforts.

For context, the Nintendo Switch launched on March 3, 2017, and Nintendo has repeatedly cited the importance of integrated hardware-and-software design across its history.

Furukawa has also spoken elsewhere about early development work on a Zelda project for Nintendo’s next hardware, and Nintendo typically communicates platform and software updates through channels such as Nintendo Direct and the Nintendo eShop.

Taken together, the executives’ remarks reinforce that Nintendo views the integrated development model — pairing hardware innovation with bespoke software — as central to its strategy for future platforms and exclusive experiences.
