Description

Nintendo has bolstered its Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack retro library today by adding the arcade racing classic Ridge Racer 64 to its Nintendo 64 game catalog.

Released originally in 2000, Ridge Racer 64 delivers fast-paced, drift-heavy racing action and marks a significant return as it coincides with the game's upcoming 25th anniversary, celebrated on February 14, 2025. Developed by Nintendo Software Technology and published by Namco, Ridge Racer 64 is renowned for translating the exhilarating arcade experience of the Ridge Racer franchise to Nintendo’s N64 hardware.

Featuring a robust suite of gameplay modes—including Quick Play, Grand Prix, Car Attack, Time Attack, and Multiplayer—the game offers players nine unique tracks across three vibrant environments.

Multiplayer enthusiasts can challenge friends locally through Battle Mode, Stage Mode, and Team Mode, maintaining the game’s reputation for accessible yet competitive racing. In announcing the update, Nintendo emphasized the breadth of modes available to players.

Gamers can dive straight into a three-lap Revolution Novice course in Quick Play, test their prowess with Grand Prix mode, or unlock new vehicles by conquering Car Attack.

Time Attack provides an additional layer of replayability, letting users race against their own best records.

The local Multiplayer experience remains a highlight, supporting heated races in three distinct formats perfect for competitive sessions. To access Ridge Racer 64 on the Nintendo Switch, users must maintain an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.

This addition reflects Nintendo’s ongoing commitment to expanding its classic library, offering both longtime fans and newcomers access to landmark titles from the company’s history. The latest game update arrives alongside noteworthy additions for other regions: the Japanese version of the service recently received Turok and Turok 2 in its 'mature' N64 app lineup.

Meanwhile, last week’s SNES library expansion brought Fatal Fury 2, Super Ninja Boy, and Sutte Hakkun to the platform, further highlighting Nintendo’s strategy of regularly refreshing its back catalog through the eShop. Ridge Racer 64's arrival not only commemorates a key anniversary for the franchise but also cements its legacy within Nintendo’s revered racing game heritage.

Available now via the eShop for all qualifying Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers, it provides another opportunity to revisit—or discover for the first time—one of the late Nintendo 64 era’s definitive racing experiences.
