Nintendo has taken another step in refreshing its brand identity as the gaming world awaits news on the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2.
The company recently unveiled redesigned Nintendo eShop cards, first sighted in Brazil and currently exclusive to that region.
These new cards feature fresh artwork of iconic Mario franchise characters, making them a notable update from previous designs and signaling Nintendo's ongoing investment in both its digital and retail presence ahead of future hardware releases.
Spotted by reputable Brazilian Nintendo news source Portal Super Mario on X (formerly known as Twitter), the updated eShop cards showcase new renders of classic characters.
These include Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, Toad, and a refreshed Donkey Kong, who is now depicted with his design from the upcoming Donkey Kong Bananza title.
The characters displayed are returning figures from earlier eShop card collections, offering continuity while introducing a modern aesthetic synonymous with Nintendo’s current branding.
One significant change noted across the new eShop cards is their geometry — the cards now adopt a square format, diverging from the traditional rectangular shape seen in prior series.
This update reflects Nintendo's penchant for delivering subtle design innovations in tandem with product evolutions, particularly as the company's ecosystem integrates with both digital and brick-and-mortar markets.
At present, these updated Nintendo eShop cards are only available in Brazil, and Nintendo has not confirmed plans for a global rollout or revealed whether additional characters from previous designs will be included in future waves.
The choice to pilot this redesign in the Brazilian market follows Nintendo's continued efforts to strengthen its presence in South America and diversify product offerings for local audiences.
These changes to the eShop card lineup come as Nintendo continues to refine its digital storefront and promotion strategies, notably ahead of the eventual Switch 2 launch.
The original Nintendo Switch, launched in March 2017, has enjoyed phenomenal global success with over 125 million units sold as of 2024, making it the second best-selling home console in history.
The refreshed eShop card designs serve as yet another indicator that Nintendo is aligning its retail and digital assets for a new era.
For now, fans outside Brazil will have to wait and see if these new eShop cards, featuring the beloved Mario cast and the new Donkey Kong Bananza artwork, will be released in other regions.
Nintendo has yet to provide further details but enthusiasts can expect updates as the company continues rolling out initiatives in the lead-up to the next-generation Switch hardware.
