Mortal Kombat 1 Surpasses 8 Million Sales as NetherRealm Studios Moves to Next Project

Since its launch in September 2023, Mortal Kombat 1 has cemented its position as a powerhouse in the competitive fighting game genre.

Developed by the acclaimed NetherRealm Studios, the latest installment in the iconic Mortal Kombat franchise has now officially surpassed eight million units sold across all platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

This milestone includes sales from the original release as well as the Definitive Edition, which hit shelves in May 2024.

NetherRealm Studios shared the news via social media, thanking the passionate "Mortal Kombat Kommunity" for their continued support.

In its announcement, the studio stated, “8 million units and counting!

We are deeply grateful to our fans worldwide.” This update reflects the enduring popularity of Mortal Kombat 1 and the resilience of the Mortal Kombat brand, recognized for its innovative gameplay and rich legacy spanning over three decades.

Data compiled by fighting game industry site EventHubs highlights that Mortal Kombat 1 has added approximately 1.8 million units in sales within the past eight months.

This performance outpaces one of its biggest genre rivals, Street Fighter 6, which has shipped over 6 million units since its debut.

Despite its remarkable success, Mortal Kombat 1 still trails behind its predecessor, Mortal Kombat 11, which recorded more than 15 million copies sold as of 2022.

In an official update released last May, NetherRealm Studios confirmed it has shifted development resources to focus on its "next project." This transition also marks the conclusion of additional downloadable content (DLC) for Mortal Kombat 1, with the studio clarifying that there would be no further new characters or story expansions for the current game.

The statement underscores NetherRealm’s commitment to continuous innovation in game development, with fans eagerly awaiting news of what’s next for the award-winning team.

While there is currently no native version of Mortal Kombat 1 announced for the anticipated Switch 2, the game's release on the original Nintendo Switch has provided accessibility to Nintendo’s handheld-hybrid gaming community.

Reviews and performance analyses, conducted in June 2024, have offered valuable insights into how Mortal Kombat 1 runs on the Nintendo platform, highlighting both the challenges and achievements of porting such a graphically demanding title.

Mortal Kombat 1’s ongoing commercial success solidifies its place as one of 2023’s top fighting game releases.

As the studio moves forward, the gaming community will be watching closely for updates from NetherRealm Studios on its next major project, all while celebrating the accomplishments of one of the genre’s most legendary franchises.
