Description

Nintendo has released a significant system firmware update for the Nintendo Switch 2, addressing several backwards compatibility issues that have affected players of some of the platform’s most popular titles.

As the successor to Nintendo’s groundbreaking hybrid console, the Switch 2 launched with a heavy focus on supporting the extensive Nintendo Switch library.

However, early adopters noted several compatibility concerns, which Nintendo has now begun to resolve. Among the most notable fixes in this update are improvements to Super Smash Bros.

Ultimate, the acclaimed crossover fighting game developed by Bandai Namco Studios and Sora Ltd., with publishing and ongoing support from Nintendo.

Reports surfaced soon after Switch 2 owners began playing online that matches involving Mii Fighters would sometimes terminate abruptly when players matched against opponents using the original Nintendo Switch hardware.

According to an official statement shared on the Super Smash Bros.

Ultimate eShop page, the latest firmware update “addresses an issue where, during online play, if a Nintendo Switch 2 player and a Nintendo Switch player were matched and the Mii Fighter was used, the match could end immediately.” Nintendo has confirmed that this problem is now fixed as of the June 19, 2025 patch. Additional improvements for the Mii Fighter include a workaround for incorrectly displayed thumbnail images when creating or editing and saving a custom fighter.

Nintendo notes that saving the Mii Fighter again may temporarily resolve the issue and that a permanent fix is scheduled for an upcoming update, further demonstrating the publisher’s commitment to ongoing support for its legacy titles. The firmware update also resolves a previously documented issue with Nintendo Switch Sports, a sports simulation title published by Nintendo and a spiritual successor to the Wii Sports series.

The compatibility list had cited that football matches in global online play were limited to 30 frames per second, though gameplay speed remained consistent.

Nintendo now indicates that the identified frame rate issues for Nintendo Switch Sports have been fully resolved in the June 19, 2025 update, and game behavior is now consistent with the original Nintendo Switch experience. Both Super Smash Bros.

Ultimate and Nintendo Switch Sports were among several high-profile titles scheduled for compatibility fixes according to Nintendo’s backwards compatibility resources.

Alongside these updates, Nintendo rolled out patches for additional games to ensure a seamless experience for its sizeable user base transitioning to the Nintendo Switch 2 platform. This proactive approach to backwards compatibility—particularly for crown jewel titles like Super Smash Bros.

Ultimate—underscores Nintendo’s dedication to supporting its best-selling legacy catalog on new hardware.

As the Nintendo Switch 2 continues to cement its place in the company’s console family, players can expect further system and game-level updates to enhance compatibility, stability, and gameplay experience across the platform’s rich library.
